you really want the guy (arsonist) to die that much? I'm not really criticizing you, it's just weird how most of the comments toward Kyoto Animation start with sympathy and always end up wishing *something* upon the perpetrator

its not weird, because we sympathize with the victims normally we want them to feel better and one way to make that happen is by finishing off the killer.

Thanks for linking that Hollywood Reporter article in this tidbit. I hadn't read that and it really gave me a lot more detail on some things I hadn't read/heard about before. One can only think how things might have been different if the Saitama police reacted differently to Matsumoto's complaint about his neighbor, as there was easily enough for at least an arrest for assault.

I hope they execute him too and I'm not even a fan of the death penalty in general but this is one of those extreme cases where I'm willing to make an exception.

Yup sure do. He did something that was absolutely awful to innocent people that only wanted to share their work with the world, one of the worst incidents in Japan in years (that's not a natural disaster). He doesn't deserve to live whatsoever.

awful is an understatement for murder. And also, it's not "one of," it's *the* worst since 1948 and the baby murders. It even outstrips the sarin attack in fatalities.
But uh, while he's gonna get noosed for sure, I think people should consider this attack is the culmination of otaku culture and what happens when you detach yourself from reality with next to no self-awareness. What can solve that, I'm not sure. But so long as it exists and we continue to embrace and endorse the toxic misogyny surrounding animedom, something like this will inevitably happen again one day. Refer to all those undocumented incidents in the idol industry...
Like when you read on the background of this psycho, he's pretty much the embodiment of otaku stereotypes. His chosen obsession being, of course, fixated on KyoAni.

What on earth does misogyny have to do with the KyoAni arson? Don't get me wrong, misogyny is very real, and it's horrible, but I don't think there is a single fact connecting it to KyoAni. Has there been even a single bit of reporting suggesting that the arsonist targeted women or hated women?
And for that matter, what does any of this have to do with Otaku culture in general? ANN linked to an excellent article from The Hollywood Reporter on this tragedy. The reporter talked to the alleged arsonist's neighbor, who reported various strange behavior, but nothing that suggested an interest in anime. He reported that the alleged arsonist would play strange sound effects on loop but never actual anime or anime-related music. I haven't seen anything suggesting that this guy was some kind of anime otaku other than the fact that he chose to burn down an anime studio. He wasn't known to attend anime-related events, he wasn't known to watch anime or listen to anime music, he wasn't into cosplay, gunpla, etc. Have you come across any articles which suggest the contrary?
And as for the alleged arsonist and people wishing harm upon him: He's in a burn ward undergoing rehab right now. With the exception of literal torture, that's probably just about the worst thing he could possibly be enduring.

And if you read the Hollywood Reporter article, you'd see that the arsonist's neighbor never heard any anisong or any anime sounds coming out of the arsonist's apartment despite making a handful of complaints of disturbing the peace to the police department so the arsonist likely wasn't an anime otaku.

It's no more otaku culture overload than it is (insert whatever social issue you want to attack). It's mental illness. When you live in a society that is reluctant to not only acknowledge that there is an issue but even more reluctant to ensure that its citizens have access to medicine/therapists that can help those suffering from these issues, this sort of thing is only likely to happen again.
