Nozomi Entertainment had the TV series until very recently. They only ever released it on DVD. |

Is this the first 4k Blu-ray anime released in the US? Or has GKIDS released some i'm not aware of? Edit: forget what I said.

If they have good film masters, then I can see it because the art style for this movie is pretty trippy. I just hope it doesn't cost crazy special release money. Though that may be impossible to avoid.
PS I don't have a 4K monitor or tv yet either. But since I don't have a tv bigger than 32 inch, when I look at HDR sets, some of the smaller ones, like in the 43 inch range, they look pretty nice... especially in the springtime when last year's sets go on sale. 
There has been a numbers game with flat screens since they started- bigger is always better and all that- but I hear that HDR is a real improvement. You guys shouldn't get too excited.
As far as I can see, Discotek are not doing/commisioning a brand new 4K remaster. This movie already had its 4K release in Japan and it's probably just getting ported. But the reason you shouldn't get excited is because the remaster isn't ideal. They applied DNR and then some very ugly sharpening to it. Here's what it looks like: https://images2.imgbox.com/c8/d1/DpZOnMMH_o.jpg It's not the worst thing in the world, but yeah would be preferable to have a natural, filmic look than this fuzzy, inorganic, overfiltered look. Sadly almost every 4K remaster of old anime movies so far have had similar treatment. |

^Yeah, this has been happening with TMS titles that have gotten the UHD treatment lately, including the Lupin Mamo & Cagliostro movies that have come out and considering Akira's also one of theirs, I expect that to also look bad (and worse when/if FUNi does their own release because of their usual compression issues).

As far as I'm concerned, 4K is a fad. I still have a 1080p TV/PC monitor for everything from watching TV to playing PC games. I've looked at those 4K TVs at Wally World and Best Buy. I don't see any difference betwen 1080p and 2160p. None. Hell, I can't even see any difference between 720p and 1080p! Most people can't without sitting very close to the display or using a very big TV.
