I just saw that release today!
I haven't paid much attention recently in my Wal-Mart for the past 10 days but I think they just unpacked their copies this past week and put them on the shelf. It's a decent price IF you want a film with NO EXTRAS listed. I think this release is just the movie and the two audio tracks, no frills. As far as video quality goes, I don't think it'll be better than the past releases. I think they're STILL using that imperfect HD master created in Japan years ago for the original Japanese Blu ray of Metropolis. The steelbook listed basically sounds like the import version released in the UK last year. That's what I've got now. It has beautiful steelcase artwork, too. IF you didn't get the UK version and wanted a steelcase with a DVD that WILL play on an American machine, get the Mill Creek release in October. The UK Blu ray DOES play on American players BUT the DVD is still coded Region 2/PAL so you'll need a multi-region capable DVD player than can output PAL in a signal compatible with your TV set. The Wal Mart "exclusive" Blu ray release is just a Blu ray with no extras. There's no DVD bundled on it. It does have nice slipcase art but this is a gorgeous looking film so it would be hard to screw that up! Honestly, unless you can't wait for it, I'd probably get the steelbook edition coming out in October. It makes more sense for a hardcore collector to go for that one. |
