The original Superman is a classic. She will be remembered. Condolences to her family.

This is really sad. She first made an impression on me in the short-lived James Garner TV show "Nichols." RIP and may her family, friends and fans take comfort in the body of work she left us.

The 1978 movie really isn't the original Superman. It's certainly not the first time Superman appeared in movie theaters. Fleischer/Famous Studios did 17 animated Superman shorts between 1941 and 1943 that are public domain and all online -- they're fantastically animated and tightly written; way, way better than most of the animated series and movies that followed decades later. Then, there were two Superman serials, Superman (1948) and Atom Man vs Superman (1950). THAT was the first time people saw Superman in live-action but it was really the 1950s The Adventures of Superman TV series that created the biggest fanbase in pop culture for Superman prior to the 1978 film. George Reeves was Superman for many people of at least 2-3 generations. It's still pretty much a toss-up between him and Christopher Reeve as to who was the definitive Superman. Very few people are going to argue Margot Kidder was the definitive Lois Lane in motion pictures. She could play all the right qualities -- vain, petty, smart, shallow but ultimately sympathetic and caring. An imperfect person -- the woman the perfect man needed to keep him grounded. The 1978 movie isn't perfect. They get most of the basics right but some of the humor is a bit too campy, there are some casting choices that seem odd by today's standards (Ned Beatty and Gene Hackman for many people), and the special effects are uneven. It's still definitive because it has one of the best motion picture scores created for any movie and it has enough of those sentimental, HUMAN moments that elevate it above being a "zam! pop! powy!" film that would have been forgotten decades ago. There hasn't been a DC live-action film I've liked half as much as the 1978 Superman movie or its direct sequel, period. They've also yet to cast a Superman and Lois as likeable and believable as Christopher Reeve and Margot Kidder were. The better Marvel films I've seen, btw, emulated the 1978 Superman film in the important ways. They're also NOT the films getting the loudest talk now, either... |

This is sad. Will a lot of people miss her? I remember Seth MacFarlane making fun of her on Family Guy. Can anyone explain to me why they made her look so damn crazy in that? Here is the clip:

I’ve never seen these movies, but still, I can recognize just how much she and the rest of Richard Donner’s team did to the superhero genre. RIP.[/code]

RIP to Lois Lane. The amount of movie celebrities who have voiced or narrated in an Eng. dub of anime

I liked Kidder as Lois (as one who was there in 1978 theaters, no Marvel line will ever geek-thrill us more than "You've got me?...Who's got YOU??"), and she made Amityville watchable-- Even though I sometimes confused her with Indiana Jones's Karen Allen, and wondered whatever happened to her, either. And not to speak ill of obituaries, but let's remember that even though the rest of the Internet may be buzzing about the familiar-celebrity obituary of the week, this is an anime/J-culture site, and we can remember Kidder for being the voice of one of our first looks at cable-anime back in our 80's childhoods. I've personally seen more forums destroyed by overzealous but socially-isolated "Vulture Scouts", who don't know what the other members talk about, and believe it's their duty to bring Today's Hot Topic--and guess which one--to any site they visit, topic or not. |

This is really sad, i remember watching her film in the original Superman and she will be forever remember as the original Lois Lane star in the film.
I hope she can finally meet original Superman actor Christopher Reeve in heaven. |
