Wow, this came out of nowhere. I remember watching the original TV anime ages ago.
Looking forward to it. Madhouse in charge of production again by the looks of it.

Hahaha, wow! I just saw the original series last month and this...
Well, casting new VA's is an unfortunate trend nowadays, but the news of having a Boogiepop sequel outweighs that sentiment.

Uh, you guys (the above commenters) know that the "original series" takes place AFTER this, right...? This is an adaptation of the first novel, while the old anime was a later entry in the same universe.

This series, "Seishun Buta", "Goblin Slayer", DanMachi, "The Master of Ragnarok & Blesser of Einherjar", "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime", and ": Didn't I Say to Make My Abilities Average in the Next Life?!" are all getting either an anime version or another anime version. Sheesh, my growing list of web or light-based anime shows to look forward to is staggering.

I'm really looking forward to this. I loved the few English novels that got released stateside and always thought it a shame Seven Seas never released more.

Specifically, "Phantom" dealt with the aftermath of the first light novel.
As to them changing the voice talent, it has been nearly 20 years. It might simply be that the original talent already had commitments.

It's obvious they're either too expensive now or not marketable anymore. That mentality is why we still don't have a "Shaman King" reboot. You just know they're going to one day replace Aya Hirano with Aoi Yuuki if "Lucky Star" ever gets a new anime.

OK, that's very much not a thing I expected.
... this could be interesting. The old anime is a... flavoured? focussed? take on the original material, so there's lots of scope for a new adaption to be very different. No way that the old anime would have skies that blue, for example.
[although now that I stop to think about it, the entire live-action film is, like, two stops overexposed the entire way through. So not all new]
[I have a soft spot for the old show; first DVDs I bought, even before I had a DVD player. Used to watch them in the library at uni]

Well, except for both seiyuu of original still working in the industry, and not so old to do the job - especially Kaori Shimizu, who was 16 years old when she's done voice of Boogiepop, and still voiced her in the 2015 Dengeki's fighting.
But yeah, the cast change is the obvious being after all that years.

It’s interesting to hear that the Boogiepop anime from 2000 is actually a sequel to this new anime. Studio Madhouse and the staff working on this appears like a solid choice and I’ll be sure to check this out whenever it premieres as it sounds intriguing.

Which is why I said they probably already had commitments. They might have also been reluctant to reprise roles that they did 18 years ago, but haven't done much with since then. I think there were a few radio plays for Boogiepop around the time they did the "Phantom" anime, but that was about it. Oh, and the live action movie, but I don't think the voice talent was involved in that.

Wow totally unexpected! I was just thinking about Boogiepop not too long ago actually. Never did finish it.

there are a lot of factors to consider about the topic of having new voice actress instead of old.. people are managing in the upkeep of their health really in drastic varying degrees these days everywhere, in the entire world, not just the voice acting industry, some people especially singers nowadays really sound quite different than they did just 5 years ago especially here in the US, i always wonder how they accept that change internally, but one possible outcome could certainly be declining to act in a role they previously held many years ago, especially if their voice has noticeably changed. that is a quite reasonable decision.

I think Shimizu would be okay to reprise her role because of her deep voice which sounded perfect for Boogiepop, but I can understand recast, and Yuki is also very good seiyu.
Hopefully we get to see more of Boogiepop in near future, because I really like setting and characters.
These are the kind of revivals that I love.
