Not going to lie, I don't see how live-action short leads to fully animated series. Can someone explain to me the connection?

Wasn't the last one enough of a disappointment? Just sticking live action content and song on to make it long enough to be featured as a film isn't going to won over anyone's support. Besides, if after its obvious failure they are going to ask for more money to fund a series, then they might as well start that now instead of wasting people's money on this.

Lmao 50,000 USD? What are they going to be able to do with that? That's barely enough to produce an average music video. What hopes can people have of this already unwanted Live action with such a miserable budget? I can't believe there's people willing to pledge to this nonsense

Here's a piece of interesting defence I saw for this
Quote: | I saw a lot of negative comments, but those people are missing the point. The live action and music video are not that important, the goal is to make UTD successful in theater, that should help us to get the future it deserve. |
I understand they just want to make it long enough so they can put it into theatres, building up a fanbase and increasing the odds they can make it their way without interference(which as the Star Wars prequels taught us is not always a positive), the problem is they are not really giving people anything they want. It's just padding out the OVA, when they could be out pitching this to investors.

If at first you don't succeed, pad out the run time to feature length & try again.

I've been wondering about this project for some time now. I didn't support it but I was interested in seeing it and possibly buying the project once it becomes available.

They weren't able to get full funding(investors) for their TV series through the last Kickstarter, so they are going back to try again, essentially. They are going to put Episode 0 in theaters attached to a music video and a 20 minute live-action short, which they hope will raise more funding and get investors interested.
I gave a lot for the first project and was happy with the finished product, but overall, it was poorly managed and failed to get them the investors they were trying to get. So now they are trying again... and I'm not really interested. I'd like to see the story continue, but have zero interest in a live action thing and just don't have the money to keep pledging if it's not going directly to a TV series. They need to just get this funded traditionally or figure out a way to get Netflix or Crunchyroll on board. There is nothing about this series that seems like it would require significant changes in order to be marketable. It's about pretty attractive girls fighting monsters. It should have no problem getting funding, or finding an audience, if the story is half as good as the pilot was.

I like Under the Dog too, and wish this was about sequels. Not much interested in a reissue.

Eh, I don't know about that. The original OVA pretty much flatlined with the general fandom, all buzz around the project died as soon as it was released and I've never seen anyone clamoring for more, nor has it been object of much discussion or anything at all. I think they just have to admit the project wasn't that inovative to begin with and that there is no interest in yet another "Hot girls fight things" anime

I think the future of Under the Dog was over before it even had a chance to start.
Could this really be the case of management gone bad?

To be fair to them, I don't get the feeling it was ever intended to be innovative or original, they just wanted this old script to be adapted exactly the way they wanted it to be.Then again I could be wrong, the project was long enough ago that I've forgotten some of the key points.

To be honest, I'm a little bitter at a lot of the backers and the community for that. Expectations were, frankly, pretty absurd. "There wasn't enough exposition", "there was too much action", "I didn't understand where the story was going", "the main characters were girls" etc, were all complaints I heard multiple times. I honestly have no idea what the hell people expected from a 30 minute pilot episode, but as far as I'm concerned, it did a fantastic job of setting the stage for the rest of the narrative. And was exactly what they promised. People were acting like they were promised a complete story or something..
Also, if there was no interest in "hot girls fighting monsters"/girls-with-guns I don't think this would've set the record for the highest Anime Kickstarter at the time.

I didn't back it or watch it, so I can't judge the actual material, but I distinctly remember it was marketed as something that was unique enough they didn't want to risk losing their "vision" if they went through the regular production committee process, but if their vision was just High school girls fighting dystopian things it's not like there was a lot of uniqueness to it that could be lost?
According to an older ANN article about it, by the time the first funded episode was launched, they were already in talks with Netflix and Crunchyroll for its distribution, but that doesn't seem to have gottten anywhere, so I guess it's safe to assume neither of those are interested in this project

Just to note, that record has since been surpassed by the Nekopara OVA, and that one will be hour-length. So instead of hot girls fighting monsters with guns there seems to be a healthy amount of interest in cute catgirls doing cute things...

^Yep, that's why I noted "at the time".

Isn't that kind of what everyone says about their pet project though? "It's unique and I don't want my vision screwed up by grubby executives" is a pretty understandable sentiment and something I think most creatives would appreciate and relate to.
They marketed it as a fusion of 80s-90s action, especially girls with guns, with modern animation and character designs. And that's exactly what it was.
Also, when they were pitching this(originally between 2010-2013), to be fair, girls with guns was dead as dirt, and moe was at its peak, so I could easily see them struggling to get it greenlit as is. If I can be allowed some speculation, I bet they were told many times to infuse a bit more slice of life into the story, and perhaps make the characters a little less hot and a little more cute. These days, I feel like UTD could easily be greenlit as is(unless there is still something ridiculous coming up in that story that no one but the crew and their potential investors know about), but for some reason it's just not...
