I hate to say it but giving Gundam to Sunrise won't do much harm seeing as they've had their hands deep in the series for so long.

Pretty sure they have had the copyright for a long time too. The wording of the article is a bit odd, but Tomino is talking about the past. There is no indication of when he actually gave the copyrights over. However, given he mentions the franchise wouldn't have got where it is if he hadn't, I am guessing that means the copyright was Sunrise's from very early on. So this is a no news, sort of pie-in-the-sky imaginings, of if he had the copyrights these days.

Japanese ver of George Lucas complaining again about Gundam ? nothing new here, I like were the franchise is and he needs relax and let Sunrise do their thing.

I think many people associate Gundam with both him and Sunrise. It kind of reminds me of how Mickey Mouse is associated with both The Walt Disney Company and Walt himself.
