No no... not asking to choose which is better..

Currently about half way through the TV series and it's been bugging me ever since the start that the viewers are almost expected to know what the hell happened previously.

Now, with regards to the OVAs, I have read that the TV is basically a re-telling of the first OVA and that the second OVA is basically mindless fun. But for the sake of wanting to watch something without missing out on anything, is there anything in the first OVA that can explain the start of the TV series better. It says - TV is the retelling of the OVA but maybe there was something I missed out? Somewhere in the last episode it mentioned spoiler[Yohko recruited Momiji to be a pilot?]. Now I don't remember seeing that anywhere.

And is it me or is there something wrong with the picture if inserting a 100 yen coin into some random thing before going into battle. I can't tell if I like this series or find it too corny.

First off, to answer the question in the spoiler tag:

spoiler[In the OVA, Yohko does not recruit Momiji. At the start of the first episode, Momiji and the others have already been chosen as pilots, but they are struggling in their practice battles with the Red Snappers because they are one pilot short of a full team of 4. Lawson is the one that ends up going back in time to recruit Yohko to fill out the team, as he apparently did with the other pilots.]

IMHO, you are not missing much by not seeing the OVAs. I don't know about the TV show, as I have not seen it, but I thought the OVA story was weak at best. There are some interesting things about the structure of the future world Yohko and team are recruited to fight in, but instead of giving them anything but passing mention the story focuses almost entirely on Yohko and how she is so much better at everything than everyone else. The other characters seem to be there mostly to provide a way to show how good Yohko is, and they don't have much depth themselves. I'm sure having only 6 episodes between the 2 OVAs limited how in depth the story could be, but I didn't really like what they chose to do with it. There's no sense of real conflict in anything as there is little doubt that Yohko will always prevail, and there's not much more to the plot since it focuses so much on Yohko herself.

I suppose, discounting the plot entirely, you could focus on animation quality, or music, or voice acting. Unfortunately, while I suppose the voice acting was adequate (if you are a Hayashibara Megumi fan, she voices Madoka) the animation is of very poor quality and the music is mostly forgettable. The animation quality does improve slightly in the second OVA, but the plot is even less interesting than in the first, so overall I don't think you gain much. You mention that you heard the second OVA is just mindless fun, but I would consider taking the word "fun" out of that analysis. Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop

According to the official website linked in the ANN encyclopedia entry, the OVAs themselves were adapted from a novel, so that may have been the source for the TV show as well instead of it having been adapted from the OVAs.

IIRC, this only happens once in the OVA, the first time Yohko pilots the TA-29, but that scene was definitely cringe-worthy. Of course, it's a nod to the fact that Yohko's spoiler[skill at the arcade is where her great piloting skills were developed, which is why Lawson scouted her out for the Terra pilot team.]

All in all, with so many other truly great things to watch out there, I would not recommend spending much time and effort tracking down the OVAs unless you really end up liking the TV show or are so curious about it that you just have to see them.

Ah thanks. I figures as much it was kinda of the same thing but adapted differently. To be honest, I think the TV is dumb so far. Talk about out of the range of credibility and into a realm of timing traveling using the janitors room and so forth. But I'll finish it anyways since I got myself up to episode 13. Why swim half across the ocean only to stop right.. Rolling Eyes
