So I take it this means for the foreseeable future all Sentai shows going forward will be split between Anime Strike and HIDIVE? Lame.

I know this probably affects dozens of people (inb4 Arrested Development .gif), but if HIDIVE is claiming to not be affiliated with TAN, what happens to TAN's subscribers?
Matt Greenfield and John Ledford aren't fooling me. HIDIVE is clearly just another one of their shells, but you can't exactly pretend to be a separate service and inherit an other one's subscriber base. |

There hasn't been a time table as to when TAN's online service will shut down. It may happen gradually, as they allow some people to finish out their subscription terms. They could also work out a deal when TAN subscribers are migrated to Hidive. Other services have done similar moves, so there is a precedent for it. |

Okay, I guess. But I'm guessing Anime Network and/or HiDive will be bought out within a year, probably by Amazon but perhaps the Crunchyroll/Funimation alliance. Its current position in the market in the face of better-funded and more aggressive competition probably means its ripe for a buyout.

I really can't see Ledford and company ever selling out to Funimation. There's been far too much bad blood between them. Plus, Funimation already failed really hard once in he TV/VOD realm, so who knows if they would be eager to re-enter it. I suppose Amazon could be a possibility. However, what HiDive and Strike are going for appear to be two different business models. Amazon is taking a curated route specifically to its Prime subscribers, while HiDive seems to be getting as broad of a library as possible to reach as many viewers as possible, including a free commercially supported venue. The two business models aren't really compatible. However, I could see Amazon allowing either TAN or HiDive to make their content available via a subscription on Amazon channels. They would be far from only anime offerings, though they would probably have more substantial libraries. I'm think this move is to simply separate their VOD and online offerings more. I also wouldn't be surprised if HiDive attempted to gain content from more publishers, where TAN is more limited in the aspect. As their primary business is VOD, they only have a limited number of slots to fill each month per provider. I wouldn't be surprised that if part of the trouble they've been having getting third party content is their unwillingness to give up VOD slots for shows. |

Rinne 3 is the ongoing one. Frame Arms Girl had its finale yesterday. Either way I will be glad to jump ship for HIDIVE. |

So Anime Network isn't doing streaming anymore? And Hulu is removing dozens of Sentai titles. Amazon is looking even more like the new home for Sentai titles.

That is surprising, as I thought for sure that the VOD cable service was to eventually disappear rather than the online service.
I was a Anime Network VOD subscriber for years until it mysteriously faded away earlier this year from my cable provider and went to Crunchyroll ( and eventually Funimation Now will come later this year ). It was OK for what I needed but I always thought the VOD service took a dive circa 2014, with the disappearance of any new dub releases and repeating often the same shows/movies within the same year. While the service was never that mainstream, it was available on more than the 15 or so cable providers they're on at the moment. it would be easy to put two and two together and assume some kind of trouble, but we rarely could have any info on the issues at hand to confirm any of them. With the acquisitions made by Anime Strike / Amazon from the past season, it would be another easy to make other assumptions on where it could possibly go, but who knows really ? The only thing I'm sure of, is it's highly unlikely I would ever subscribe to Anime Strike behind the Amazon Prime double paywall. The "Crunchyroll for subs / Funimation for dubs" model works for me -- can't Sentai follow suit ? They have an interesting library, and their older shows, either their early licences from 2009 - 2013, movies like Garden of Words, Colorful & AURA or older titles such as Nadia, Azumanga Daioh or Saikano, are nowhere to be found on the major streaming sites. It's not like their catalog and dubs aren't interesting -- I would glady pay for the triple whammy of Crunchyroll / Funimation / Sentai for all subs and dubs going around ( sorry Daisuki, One Punch Man just isn't enough ) EDIT : Saw the HIDIVE story....stay tuned I guess. Better them than Amazon if they're really at $ 4 a month. Rin-ne S3, LotGH and the various OVA are interesting, but the older titles & dubs are the key for me ( along with console apps ) |

I'm pretty sure that creating a bidding war for the streaming rights to all of these titles is the exact reason this is being done. |

Which cable provider did you have, if you don't mind me asking? TAN is available on all of the major ones, including Comcast, Spectrum (Time Warner/Charter/Beighthouse)and DirecTV. I know they fell off of some smaller cable systems, and some had replaced it with the Funimation Channel (prior to them shutting down.) But the availability of dubs and rotation of shows really depended on which provider you had and which package they offered. |
