Sounds like a little echo problem on Justin's audio...

Innocence is what happens when money just gets thrown at an auteur.

The only live-action director out of Japan that constantly gets his films released here is Takashi Miike, while South Korea films are constantly released here, with a bunch of quality films (The Wailing and The Handmaiden were two of the best films of last year).
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence just looked like Oshii as his worst. The man has a great eye for detail and some interesting ideas, but he really has his head up his ass at points.

I just watched Innocence a week ago I loved but yes it is begrimed with pretentious literary references and references to Oshii's other works i.e. the Colocynth in the crystal ball but I may be reading too much into that.
I liked it but it is dense and obtuse when it could be lean and simple. Great to literally see Justin as for all those years I listened to ANNcast ( Mar 11th 2010-to Justin's last show) I never had a chance to catch a live taping so it's nice to put a face to the voice I heard for so many years after I got back into Anime.
I have to agree the thoughts on Anime Strike I'm a subscriber but the last big acquisition announcement Anime Strike had on their Twitter account was Magical Girl Lyrical NANOHA which I watched years ago through Netflix disc rentals and Cowboy Bebop(Original Japanese Version) .
It really sometimes like it's run by someone who's trying to act like their with it and they have no idea what "it" is. Although maybe Anime Strike will end filling the place Hulu used to for me. That is being the holding cell for weird Anime I'd randomly watch on a lark like Earth Maiden Arjuna. Daisuki has been doing pretty good on that front though what with getting old Sunrise shows and what not.

I think part of why Your Name maybe was more accepted by critics than one might presume is that animated cinema in general is going through one of the best periods in its history, particularly beyond the big American studios. I know in the UK Mark Kermode brings up animated features a lot which 10-15 years ago might have been ignored (& probably wouldn't have been made to begin with).

When Justin said "Oscar bait" I heard "Oscarbate" which sort of encapsulates how I feel about the Oscars. Hollywood makes ten original movies, most of which nobody watches, and then nominates all ten.

Nice to see Justin back, and I'll definitely rewatch Innocence very soon, but there's one thing I'd like to point out: despite being a digipaint show from 2002, GitS:SAC was animated in high definition, which means the BD release is not an upscale. That's why so many of us were eagerly awaiting a US BD release for the past 10 years, only to be disappointed by dubtitles, audio glitches in the dub track and none of the DVDs' numerous extras.

Not only dub-titles, but Closed Captioned dub-titles. Plus the very first subtitle you see during the opening is this: .
There isn't even any Japanese in the song! Its Russian, Latin and English. Unfortunately Rightstuf wont return the BD's because I opened them.
edit: I've been listening to the ANNcast since the very first episodes, and it was really great to hear from Justin again. Hopefully next time he joins Jacob will be there too. Great episode.

It is good to hear from Justin. I really enjoyed this podcast episode. Zac, if you want to do a show discussion on a Gundam show, pick the 08th MS Team; it a short and very accessible show. I blind bought GitS Innocence and my thoughts on it line up with what Zac and Justin talked.

Justin is really photogenic.
As far as Amazon Prime's niche, I could see them chasing those big-ticket shows that want license fees that even Crunchyroll is wary over, since they have the subscriber base to pay for it, provided they can effectively promote them.

Always nice to see Justin on the podcast. Buried Treasure introduced me to Project A-ko; I should really watch Angel Cop if it's his favorite.

Nice show!!! I'm an Innocence freak!!! The artwork, music, opening situation "help me", the parade scene, focusing on Batou, music box section with him and his dog, the freaky police man on the boat, dolls, the grocery store scene rules!......I have loved it from day one. I guess I'm the odd one out.
But yeah great ANNCast show. I enjoyed it here at 3AM. Thanks!

Given CR's business model relies entirely on simulcast anime, I imagine they have deep pockets when it comes to shows expected to be popular.

Yeah, the audio only version definitely suffered from that problem. I popped into the video to see their beautiful faces just now though and it doesn't seem to be a problem on the video version. Hopefully this is just a one off problem!
