You lost me at "Dubbed Songs".
This is certainly unexpected news. |

It's been so long since someone took a swing at this, I'm actually looking forward to it (one more reason I'm glad I backed Skip Beat). Fact is, dubbed shows switching into Japanese for the songs (with different voices, of course) always takes me out of a show a little bit. It's particularly awkward with in-universe songs, like in Love Live for example. I think a lot of the hate for dubbed song comes from the fact a lot of them have just turned out badly, but back in the 90s, there were some pretty respectable attempts ("Just Think of Tomorrow" and "Downtown Dance" in The Irresponsible Captain Tylor were just fine, IMO). It's hard to do well, but that doesn't make the idea a bad one. Let's see how it turns out. |

^ agreed. Dubbed songs kind of went the way of the dodo as dubs in general have become too much of an expense to even have as often anymore. I'm glad that Pied Piper put kickstarter funds toward things like this, it makes me glad I supported them and I'm hopeful I'll be far less disappointed in this release than I was in funis disaster of a kickstarter effort.

I thought the reason you don't hear dubbed songs much anymore is because the record label groups involved with funding an anime want the original Japanese songs to be promoted heard and not have them "dubbed over" (I put that in quotes since there's no such thing if the dvd/blu-ray release will also have Japanese audio with the original songs intact). I thought that was the reason why Avex Trax didn't want the songs in One Piece dubbed anymore. |

I assume that Pied Piper applied for approval for the insert songs first, then went on to the openings and endings. Middle out being more efficient, and all that.

Have you even heard any of Vic Mignogna's covers? Or any of the ones on YouTube (even though those use original music)? Seriously, we don't know how it's going to turn out, so stop being weebiased and wait to see what happens - this isn't 4Kids we're talking about. |

Because a lot of people like dubbed songs. Personally I am ambivalent about dubbed opening and ending songs, but I definitely prefer to have dubbed insert songs that are performed by the characters. It is just too bizarre when everybody speaks English and then somebody starts singing in Japanese for no apparent reason. It might not be so bad if some reason was given for it, but I have never seen that happen. My opinion is that people who speak Japanese should sing in Japanese, and people who speak English should sing in English. Unless there is a reason for doing it differently.
Many dubbed songs have turned out well for a lot of people. |

It may not. But to prejudge and say there is no way that it can turn out well is just stupidly narrow-minded. |

I think Answerman had a column about this once. If I remember correctly, dub companies were (badly) dubbing over songs without permission, and, yes, it mad the originators upset.
One of the big "thank yous" in the update went to TV Tokyo for getting the rights. In their words, negotiating these rights is nigh impossible, but the Skip beat songs were handled by TV Tokyo Music which handled the approval process. The English lyrics had to be approved in advance by the Japanese lyricist. Mela Lee and the sub team created the lyrics. Mela, of course, is also a songwriter and an amazing singer. i haven't heard Nathan Sharp, but I'm looking forward to it. I do think lyric translation has come a looong way since the 90's. |

I backed Skip Beat to be able to own an official English release of a show I really enjoyed. Money being spent on dubbed songs likely won't have any positive impact for my enjoyment of the collection, but I don't really care. I'll still be getting the product that I wanted at the price that I signed up for. If people can enjoy this dub and the dub songs then that's awesome. I will say that I threw in a tip on BackerKit in hope that Ann/Pied Piper could end up financially with a net positive after getting all this together, but if she feels it better spent on something like this then I can't complain.

I'm happy about the insert songs. It will just help those episodes, especially the ones based on Sho's music video, flow so much more smoothly. I don't really care about English openings but there have been good ones done. Ouran comes to mind. |

That's awesome!!
I miss when the songs used to be dubbed in anime. It means we're closer to getting an equilvelant product to the Japanese. Shame about the ending songs, but what can you do. That should absolutely use these songs in the actual dub. Too much work was put in just for them to be extras. Now why wasn't this an option for Funimation's Kickstarter of Escaflowne. |
