Only once have I sampled karaage, and the experience was mildly underwhelming. The tantalising crevasses of crunch in the batter gave way to chewy thigh meat. For those with more experience in the matter, may I ask if that is the norm?

Karaage is literally just a way of preparing fried chicken, so just like with fried chicken theres good and bad examples.
I'm not a fan of thigh chicken personally so it has to be REALLY good for me to like it, but the good stuff tends to be more expensive.
Weirdly the karaage they sell at conbini here are fine to me, although they probably draw the ire of true karaage fans.
