What's the difference between the movies and the anime series? Is one better than the other?

The story is the same. The anime is longer and has some additional scenes (about 4-5 more minutes per episode, iirc) and its second season (coming out this Fall) should adapt the story covered in the 3rd movie and continue forward.
When it comes to censorship, there was a quick scene which was a little censored in one of the episodes, but that's it as far as I have noticed. It was uncensored in the movie (and I guess it'll also be so in the DVD/BDs of the anime), but it really isn't anything that bad.
I recommend the TV anime.

They're both great! If you can, watch them both, otherwise I guess the TV series will suffice. The good thing about the movies is that here in Japan - timing-wise - they fill the gaps between the two TV seasons adding new bits that work as a preview, and also they do show certain things from a different perspective complementing the series.

They're not *essential* but I would watch them if you can!
[but I am a hard-core fan so I might be a tad biased Anime hyper]

the anime is confusing to me (series and movies ?) + 3D style animation
