On November 30th, a spin-off of the movie "Death Note" has been decided. This time, the main character is "L." Kenichi Matsuyama (age 21) played the mysterious genius "L" in the movie "Death Note" (opened in June), "Death Note the Last Name" (currently airing), and was unexpectedly popular. The spin off, with a release date of 2007, will be a new story that does not exist in the original.
This is the first time a supporting actor that has become so popular in that degree independently. In Death Note, the character that Matsuyama plays, "L", is the rival of the main character, Light, played by Tatsuya Fujiwara. After getting an unbelievable notebook on his hand, where people whose name written in it will die, he intends to reform the world. L, who intends to expose Light's crime, started having a mind war with him. It is a challenging role, being popular playing someone with a strange look and an unbalanced character and a world's famous genius detective, but Matsuyama took up the challenge well. Right now, besides the fact that L will be the main character, everything else is unknown in the spin-off. The title has yet to be decided. The story will probably take place before "Death Note" and will have no connection with Light. Matsuyama said, "I thought I had finished the role of L after the first and second part. After three months of shooting, I still have more to do? I'm excited to be able to do more." He said that he would be interested in another challenge. About the shooting next year, he said, "Because I will be the main character, I think I'll feel lots of pressure around me." The original manga, "Death Note" is a bestseller and has sold a total of more than 23 million copies. The movie "Death Note" has totaled up to 2.8billion yen. Moreover, there has been offer rush from Hollywood and overseas to do a remake. The second half of the movie "Death Note the Last Name," which opened in November has increased its box office to 4.0 billion yen. The record-breaking Death Note boom led to the exceptional development of a sequel for the current movie. Matsuyama becoming L again will surely create further attention. The debut of being a Seiyuu in the Anime Version: On November 30th, Matsuyama has gone to a postrecording of the current "Death Note" anime, currently airing at Nippon TV as a guest. Matsuyama, who is trying out voice acting for the first time, will not be playing his part in the movie, L, but instead, he will be playing the Shinigami, Jealous, who lost his life after falling in love with a human girl. "It's hard to match up to the timing, but Jealous is my favorite character in the original work, so I was happy to take on the job," Matsuyama said proudly. The episode is expected to air Dec. 26th.
