It means realistic, life situations that you might find in day to day living. One of the better examples would probably be Kare Kano.

A slice of life is the feeling when you wake up in the morning, breathe in the sweet air of wherever you are, smile, then remember that you're an unemployed hack who, at age 35, still finds himself(or herself) sitting in front of the TV every saturday morning.......Or what Emerje said sounds better.

I don't really think KareKano fits into the "slice of life" category. It's a shoujo anime with an ongoing romantic plot. I generally use "slice of life" when there simply isn't any other way to describe the show, when the ONLY thing in the show is a slice of the character's daily life, with no real plot or action. To me, this implies an episodic show with little or no link between episodes. Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou is the perfect example; in episode 2 of the first OAV, there's one vignette where you see Alpha just spending her day preparing ONE CUP of coffee, with the wind blowing outside and the sound of the waves. It doesn't get any more "slice of life" than that. And I love it

Yeah, I guess that sounds like a better example, Dan. I was actualy struggling with an example and KareKano was the closest thing I could come up with. I guess KareKano is more along the lines of Azumanga Daioh and to some extent Here is Greenwood.

The best example is Figure 17, which, without the parts where they fight the monsters, is nothing but the ordinary life on a farm and at a grade school. It sounds werid, but it is much more about the slice of life then fighting the Alien monsters.

Then again, Figure 17 has an ongoing plot about the alien monsters and Tsubasa's ongoing difficulty in dealing with traumatizing experiences. It's true we see some slices of her life, but honestly which anime doesn't have that to some extent? There's always *some* background about the daily life of the characters, in order to give them more depth. But when the FOCUS of the show is about their ordinary daily experiences, then I think it can be called slice of life.
Azumanga Daioh, now THAT is slice of life (plus comedy). I'd say Piano is also slice of life (plus a little bit of drama).

For the life of my I can't name a slice of life anime. And while I've encountered it quite a few times, the only slice of life type thing I can recall off the top of my head is the movie Smoke.

Wouldnt Golden Boy be a perfect example of a "slice of life" / comedy?

Figure 17 has most focus on the slice of life with the main character and her "sister". The plot spends like 35 minutes out of most episodes on the farm or class, with the five minutes of combat reaffirming the lesson lernt in life.
