Recently, I've been keeping up with some of the newer anime being released such as Welcome to the NHK and Bokura ga Ita, and I find them to be fantastic. I have also been watching Death Note but surprisingly, I've lost a lot of interest in it; the manga started dragging on vol. 9, and I am really not in the mood for a dark anime right now. But I will start watching later (obviously).
NHK is probably one of the strangest animes out there since FLCL. A lot of otaku-ness, strange conspiracy theories, and a whole bunch of other stuff which probably drives people crazy. But nontheless, it is halarious. Watching Sato be an idiot, watching him playin galges all night, watching him in his first struggle of love since high school, etc. Bokura ga Ita is more on the romance side, and I'd just let you know, I'm not gay...I read that the majority of people watching this are teenage girls. I've been captured by many anime romances, such as hardcore ones like KGNE. I love how this one has comic releif though, so you don't die of depression while wathing. Death Note will definetly be amazing, as it already looks more promising than the manga. Although I won't start watching it until much later, you can bet on this one being a favorite. There are a lot of other promising anime coming out, or are already being released. The remake if Negima!? looks amazing. My bro is in Bartender right now, and he says it's not "one of the most abysmally boring shows in years," as said in the Fall 2006 Anime Preview Guide. I don't think Genshiken fans can even wait for the new Genshiken OAV or the remake of Kujibiki Unbalance, just as Black Lagoon fans are definetly enjoying the Second Barrage. Kekkaishi as well as the new Kanon already have spots on the Best Rated (weighted and/or bayesian) list, and many others such as D.Grey Man, Pumpkin Scizzors, Busou Renkin, Black Blood Brothers, Code Geass, and Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto are getting amazing ratings as well. What do you guys think? Are we getting hit by a wave of new, amazing anime or what? |

Ever see Cat Soup? All of the wierd stuff is just representing what's going on in Satou's mind though, I really didn't find it to be that strange.
I don't think Satou is an idiot. He's definately paranoid, but I don't think he's ignorant at all.
Personally, I have enjoyed a great deal of anime this year. I've talked about this on another forum and many of them didn't agree with me though. |

True. He isn't an idiot, but he's being an idiot. Watching his flashbacks and how he acted in high school, and then seeing him now, I think he's being an idiot. Get out and go do something man.
BTW I joined that forum that you posted a link to. And wow man, that Cat Soup looks...a little...odd...maybe REALLY odd. |

I stopped watching the series around Episode 1, since the episode wasn't all that interesting and not that much happened. However, I just recently watched 29 episodes of Nana and it was so addicting that I marathoned all 29 available episodes in one go (that's about 9.5 hours), even though I found the first three or so episodes to be somewhat boring. Now, I can't believe that I almost dropped Nana after the third episode, and I'm more willing to give a lot more similar-type shoujo series a chance, namely Bokura ga Ita. Kare Kano too, if I get around to it.
Definitely, and the whole year was pretty amazing, with Haruhi, Higurashi, Utawarerumono, NHK, Nana, REC, and many other great series. The Fall 2006 season itself has some really great series as well, with Kanon 2006, Death Note, Sumomomomomomo, Soukou no Strain, new Negima, and probably others that I haven't gotten around to seeing yet. Pumpkin Scissors is kind of meh right now, but hopefully it can quickly avoid the gonzotrash route and get its gears started really soon, hopefully by episode 10. Here is a big list of pretty much all the thread made about Fall 2006 series, as well as older series. Interesting how less than half of the titles under Fall 2006 overlap with those included in ANN's Fall Anime Preview Guide. |

Well the only shows that have truely impressed me of late have been Black Lagoon: TSB, Chevalier D'Eon, and The Third. BL is probabally the best action series that I've seen in a very long time, with some excellent characters, good stories, and a gritty atnosphere. Chevalier immediately hooked me with an excellent mystery, great swordfighting action, a supernatural atnosphere, and wonderful art. Lastly The Third has also been an enjoyable take on the post-apocalyptic world with the various adventures of Honoka and her AI Tank. I'm really looking forward to the final episode.
Right now I'm making my way through some of the newer ones, Night Head Genesis, and Pumpkin Scissors which I like and are entertaining but not as impressive. I'll reserve judgement of those until I see them all though. I also just started D Gray-man yesterday which seems fairly good. I go more for the science fiction, or action/comedy/drama stuff personally, however, now and then I'm in the mood for something different like a romantic comedy or something. I'd pretty much watch anything that was put in fromt of me and probabally like it if the story was somewhat entertaining in some way. I'm highly (or will be) enjoying rewatching the great series I loved from last season that got liscensed like Bleach, Ergo Proxy, Fate/Stay Night, Full Metal Panic: TSR and Noein as they're released here finally. |

As far as "new-releases," the only on I watch for that is Death Note. The only reason is I am still kinda newbish when it comes to finding new series. I know what I like and all, but if its a series that is recent, I will usually wait on it until I hear good reviews about it. Right now I just watch the series most people are familar with so I can carry a conversation with them when I talk about anime .

Maybe I wasn't clear but I do watch anime I like that people I know don't. I was tryin to seperate series that just came out from those that I am new to but have been out for a while. If I see that it has a good review I'll check it out. But I don't like what I always see. Like FLCL. People love it in general but I didn't I thought it was tactless. I always watch a series with a neutral standpoint. Its up to the show to try and sway me. And there are series out there that I love but the people I know either haven't heard of it/won't watch it because of content/are too busy trying to watch other series.
For example, I've been tryin to promote Eyeshield 21 to everyone because its underrated but no one I know will give it a chance because its about American football. |

I was keeping up with five of the new series (one just ended). The negima remake is doing a really good job and so far i like it more then the original (though you should watch the original because you will not get the full effect). Death Note is just amazing, if it continues the way it's going it will recieve one of my few Masterpiece ratings. I just love the concept of this one and the cat and mouse game between Light and L. NHK is another really good one. Sato always finds some way to make his life worse and it is just hilarious. Black Blood Brothers (one that is finished) had a really promising start, however after ep 6 it just slowed down and really ended with a let down. Had to give the old spoiler[everything is going to be perfectly fine ending.] Finally, i just started Sumomomo Momomo, and it is one of the funnier new series. The lead female can be annoying at times but the comedy more then makes up for it. I'm anxious to see if this series can maintain its steam and not fizzle out like so many other comedies have done.

1. You don't need to defend yourself against closed-minded idiots on this site...usually. 2. I doubt that most guys that actually do even watch shoujo anime are fags anyway. I'm 100% sure I'm straight and have no trouble admitting that I watch girl anime. I'd actually be more embarassed to admit that I've listened to girly music (typcially anime themes) and liked it than almost any other guilty pleasure. |

While I certainly see your point, there is also a need (not necessarily the right word,) to watch some of the 'classics' that are the foundation for a lot of anime discussion. Often it comes down to 'Would I like x'... 'well, it is similar to y... did you like that?' There are certainly some things I would recommend to anime newcomers before they worry too much about watching the newest series that are still showing in Japan. However, if you are hating the series and watching it just so you can tick the right box and have a conversation with a friend that is a bad reason to be watching that anime. (Unless you want to get technical about reasoning and logic, but that is a whole different ball park...) |

I don't really watch a lot of new anime, as I'm catching up on a lot of 'classic' titles, but there are a couple series that have come out fairly recently and that I've been keeping up with:
NANA: I am totally NOT a shoujo person, except for this series. I only started watching it because a friend told me that Paku Romi was one of the main characters (my obsession with her voice borders on insanity), but it really started to pull me in around episode 7. It's just such a great character anime, especially the way Hachi seems to grow from episode to episode. The people are interesting, the animation style is cute, and so far there have been no episodes that could even be considered filler. I'm hooked now, because I want to know what happens to everyone. New episodes cannot come out fast enough! Death Note: I read most of the manga, then dropped it 'cause it got flat. However, I liked the earlier parts of what I read, so I decided to watch the anime. Wow. The animation and music are absolutely STUNNING. Everything is so vibrant and yet so dark at the same time, and it's really amazing. I'm especially surprised at the amount of visual effects in such a 'dialogue oriented' story. Even though I know what happens (to a point) the anime has sort of rekindled my intrest in the series, so maybe I'll finally get around to finishing the manga. And eventually I will watch Ouran. Before I die! |

I also dropped BgI but it was after the first 3 episodes. A friend of mine told me to give it another chance so I watched 4-18 a few weeks ago and I've changed my mind about the show. It's pretty good show once spoiler[Yano's past is revealed and is no longer the show's main focus] (did that deserve a spoiler tag?). I'll admit that I still think that Kare Kano is much better than it. As for all the other shows mentioned in this thread, I watch them too: NANA, Welcome to the NHK!, Death Note, Black Lagoon: TSB, Le Chevalier D'Eon (it's starting to bore me though), Night Head Genesis, and Pumpkin Scissors. |
