Okay, does this mean I have to check out this series now?
When I hit NYCC this year will I see cosplayers staring the infamous "blue string"?
Everytime I see this design I can't help but wonder what goes on in Japanese creator's heads that can manage to make a success out of something so simple. I wonder if this character follows the mold of creation using Otaku: Anime's Database Animals.
Well, I can't wear the blue string, hell I don't even like wearing anything that falls over the shoulders. It just doesn't feel right to me.

I was a little doubting on DanMachi in the first 3 episodes (WHY DIDN'T SHE GIVE HIM THE KNIFE!?) But things started picking up in Lili's arc and the fight with the minotaur in episode 8 sealed the deal. That has to be one of the best fight scenes I've seen in a while both in terms of the animation as well as the impact it had on Bell.

I've been watching the series, and while i think its enjoyable its not "the greatest", but still fun to watch.
Though on the topic of Hestia, i've come to think upon that her blue ribbon string is actually a "belt" that keeps the cloth area under her breast to stick to her skin as close as possible. Other wise id imagine seeing a slope in her dress (or the animators decided to make it skin tight, which in that case my point is moot)

Beyond the Holy String (if indeed it is ), it's a good show to watch--
I started checking out a few episodes to see what was the Fan-Hysteria Trend of the Day, and stayed with it.
It mixes the standard trope of the Minimum-Wage Goddess--Bell is Hestia's only follower for now--and Hestia's got cute moe (in the 10's anime variety) enough for ten shows, but the concept of "Another day in the RPG world" has the same The Right Gamers Will Get It quality of more serious game-based fantasy.
Not a RPG-world gag spoof like Slayers or a game-fantasy like SAO, more just a Wreck-It Ralph spin on all the problems RPG heroes have to go through in their worlds getting their levels and selling their darn gems.
Also, it's not a "harem" comedy, since the Aiz that Bell crushes on is such a champion (in both senses of the term) alpha-girl bee-yatch she doesn't even care about her own guildmates let alone her own admirers--and we know from literally the first minute he's smashing himself into a brick wall--Bell's arc becomes more the standard trope of the oblivious guy who's so busy chasing his adolescent fantasy, he doesn't know that the frustrating but "useful" girl he's stuck with is the one most devoted to him.
Thing is, "DanMachi" just sounds like some male action-hero anime from the 80's. I'd rather go with Picking Up Girls in a Dungeon.

Watched 5 eps. Will watch the rest at some point, but I got bored watching it weekly. It's just another show about a guy with a point to prove to himself who has the super secret power to be awesome & unintentionally make vaginas stick to him like limpets. Doesn't help that having Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Bell's voice is basically a big sign that says "this is a generic teenage fantasy character whose voice will vary between soft spoken & constipated." Having Hestia's crotch get a prominent slow pan camera shot seemingly at least once every episode got annoying, too.

I agree that DanMachi is trying to do something different, but it could be better. It had a strong start, which showed a dynamic world with potential. But to me it started to become somewhat stale in its second half. I am still following it, but it will most likely not be among the memorable animes I have watched.

I agree that beyond the sexual aspects, Hestia is a charming and likable character. Unfortunately, not all fans will be able to appreciate what else she has going besides her big boobs.

Hey actually that makes perfect sense! I just noticed it while looking at her character design, and imagining her without that ribbon. Man that would look weird on her! But what's really amazing is that something so simple turned into this surprisingly big fascination by the anime community.

Interesting review article, I had to check half-way through if it was one of those deceptive Ad-vertorials slinking around ANN. Either you like it a lot or are getting paid (??). However, I believe you are right on the mark, this is a suprisingly good and well done show from the animation to the writing and I too like it for more than the Hestia Factor (which is huge!). While detractors could rightly point to commonality with many "otaku-centric" harem shows or shows "...about a guy with a point to prove to himself who has the super secret power to be awesome & unintentionally make (women flock)..." , the characters are being developed and Hestia for her part shows suprisingly deep feelings and possible personal change and growth (Bell too). It's the subtle things that make this show and I am looking forward to seeing where it goes (just what is Loki up to?)

The blue ribbon got me. I wasn't even going to watch this show until all of the hoopla over Hestia began. Clearly that marketing worked on me. I'm really glad I gave it a shot though. This has been a really fun ride so far. Hestia is adorable, Bell is oblivious, but I'm so used to that now that it doesn't even bother me. He is actually pretty bad ass at times too.
And yeah, some of those fight scenes are really quite epic. Truly a pleasant surprise of this season for me.

If there wasn't more to it than that then I wouldn't have agreed to write this editorial. Even though he has the same VA, Bell is not Kirito.

I would not say that Bell Cranel attracts the opposite sex like your usual harem lead. It is pretty obvious that the twins as well as Az are interested in whatever steroids made him level up so fast. Eina Tulle is interested in his well being since she probably receives a percentage of whatever financial gains he makes. Lily is alone in the world, so she is more like an affectionate cousin to Bell. Hestia no doubt wants to get intimate with Bell, but since she is a deity, she is in no real rush Just like Nyaruko was in no real rush to rape Mahiro.

True that Bell is not a brooding Kirito but the issue with Danmachi is that it's ultimately mediocre
I said it when I first saw it but the show is the epitome of average with nothing really strong. While the interaction between Hestia and Bell is nice, its not on a particularly strong level like say Holo and Lawrence and Hestia's genki girl antics can grate on me more than amuse.
The use of mythology is nice but feel more like a plot gimmick than even Index's use of mythology
Bell himself is problematic because I am really tired of seeing the runt that grows and invariably attracts women along the way. I get that this is a light hearted affair but give the dude some amount of edge to him. I'm not asking for Emiya Kiritsugu but give him more incentive.

Different strokes for different folks. You saw more & wrote an editorial about it. I didn't & dropped it.

The Lili arc sold me on this show. The way she is written is really great - for example, the subtle ways in which she is initially distrustful of Welf because her own previous actions causes her to fear others are like her, too. It makes her really human, made better because DanMachi doesn't push it in your face, it lets it happen naturally. The show has a lot of moments like that, and they are hard to see when you are watching it through a lens of immediate dismissal.
