It's mid-tier popular at best in what was an extremely slow and weak Winter season where not much really took off besides what were already guaranteed hits based on the brand like iDOLM@STER, Gundam The Origin, Kuroke and Kancolle, but to me it was also one of the more obnoxious shows to air in a while just going by content and it's tendency to thinly lampshade it's own genre conventions except not really go against them or do anything new or interesting with them.
All I know is that it has a lot of extras and incentives for getting the full BD/DVD set like a special art poster and that people seem to like the artwork (not the studio animation but official art style from the novels) in Japan which is probably about the only good thing about it and producer comments make them seem aware of that. I doubt it would hold up much popularity wise in a second season and be something like a Nisekoi 2 or Chuu2 to give examples of recent winter harem shows that were popular in their first seasons but far less so in their followups.

Saekano's latest two volumes are much, much better than the rest of the series, so the anime's sales may be driven - at least in part - by otaku hoping that the show will make enough money to justify adapting the remaining light novels into a second season.

Thats not exactly common knowledge. Sarcasm is a lot hard to convey on the internet, just because it sounds sarcastic in your head when you write it, does not mean it reads sarcastic. When plenty of people who acteally post in these threads have no idea if 1k is a good number or not, its easy to see how most people will miss that sarcasm.
But whatever, that is just going off-topic, just a pet-peeve of mine.
