Did anyone thing it'd turn out any other way?

Well, considering this is a Shonen Jump title I would've expected the gender balance to be a little more even. I had no idea this series was so popular with girls.

I didn't think it'd actually top the box office in the first place. I'm happy about that though.

The age of the audience isn't surprising, but the gender turnout is. I would have guessed it would be closer to 50/50.

Who knew Korosensei was so popular with the ladies?

It's not just Assassination Classroom; Japanese films in general are mostly attended by females.

Really? I wonder why. Is it because men are supposed to be busy and have no time for movies?

This is really surprising to be honest, and I'm also surprised 90% of the audience is female.

Probably girls are more easygoing about films in general, and especially such fan service things where a lot of pretty boys among the characters.
Boys can be more shy about their fandoms, even though this series has amazing Bitch teacher, who is totally cute and lovable murderer.
But even genders' sexual preferences aside, this show has main hero -- charming octopus. I just love this character. Though live action is voiced by different actor than in anime.

Proof that more women wish they could murder their teachers than men, perhaps?

It could also be that because many WSJ titles are popular with BL/yaoi fan works, maybe some of the fan girls are flocking to this movie.

I'm pretty sure Arashi and Hey Say Jump are among the most popular boy bands. A lot of women who went to see it didn't care at all about the source that the movie was adapting, they just wanted to see and/or hear their heartthrobs. Not very surprising.
