Did people really care enough about Super Sonico to warrant this?

Some comfirmation that Parasyte is getting a dub certainly is bigger news. Since this is Sentai's hometown convention, it is a interesting choice for them to go with the cosplayer dub.

Yoshiura is going to be at Anime Matsuri?
Farking hell. This is the first time in 2 years that I have a regret about leaving Texas.

No. This is a typical Sentai screwup waiting to happen.

Live Auditions
Earlier this month we announced our acquisition of the smash hit series, Parasyte -the maxim-. We are so stoked about our announcement that we thought we would let you guys in on the fun, too!
To celebrate our new show, we will be holding live auditions for some bit parts in the series. If you're the lucky winner, you'll actually get to visit Sentai Filmworks Studios and voice a minor character in the show. Plus, you'll get to see your name in the credits of our future release of Parasyte! If you think you have what it takes, head to our booth for your chance to "Be Consumed" by Parasyte.

I've never seen the show but from the way I see it this show was pretty popular.

I mean I saw the show but to me it didn't feel that interesting to watch.
It was one of those series where if there was nothing else on and you didn't want to watch re-runs then you'd watch it.
Though I'm still questioning Sentai's choice for hiring Jessica, I'm a fan of her cosplay but her limited amount of VA work is conflicting. She voiced a character in RWBY but it still doesn't feel like she has enough work to garner the main role

Super Sonico like the Kantai Collection anime is pretty average at best but the IPs seem pretty popular even in the west. I guess that'll warrant them risking a dub.

Johnny Yong Bosch's first anime role was Vash in Trigun. It really comes down to the skill of the director on whether or not they want to hire a new VA to have a main role as their first role.

I'm less concerned about a new person voicing a lead role and more concerned about whether auditions for the role were fair. Maybe Jessica Nigri really impressed the director with her audition or the director figured that with some extra effort she could handle it. Then again, since she was already hired by Sentai to serve as the "face" of the show at conventions, there is a possibility that the decision was already made in advance. It is certainly possible for newbies to be ready for larger roles right away, but I'm a bit skeptical here.

Very well said. A show can have a highly-experienced team of seiyuu and still end up sounding terrible by an unsteady or incompetent director (case in point: the myriad of recent anime shows under Chris Ayres's supervision).

Besides, Japan does this enough with celebrity idols, and no one cares.

This now makes me wonder how popular the Sonico anime really was in order to warrant a premiere of the dub....
When the first episode was showed in my anime club, everyone hated it after the first 5-10 minutes and just continued to riff on it until the very end. I couldn't even stomach 4 more episodes, since it didn't seem to get better for me and instead turned out to be one hell of a boring ride.
But good luck to Jessica Nigri on her first "big" anime VA role. I'm not going to bother re-watching the show for the dub, but I hope things go well for her from now on.
I'm still curious as to why that past announcement got a lot of people in a twist, it's not like she stole a huge or memorable role. A lot of VAs are often thrown into their first job anyway, sometimes with very quick or no auditioning. As I said in that topic, everyone needs to start of somewhere and as far as most first roles go, Sonico is pretty damn easy.

But with JYB he had acting/theater experience thanks to being cast in Power Rangers for 3 years.

Believe it or not, Super Sonico has a fanbase. She's the mascot of a whole music festival after all. It's unfortunate that your anime club didn't like the show, but SoniAni certainly isn't for everyone, just like all anime isn't going to please everybody. Tastes are subjective and what might be crap to you might be gold to someone else.
It's actually a good show if you know what Super Sonico represents and the kind of morals she employs. A lot less fanservicey than one would expect from a Super Sonico property and it has some great music. A lot of of people got in a twist about the Jessica Nigri thing because Super Sonico is a really important character to the show. She drives the whole thing forward and motivates the characters around her. She has to sing in a band, work as a gravure model, waitress at a bar, and survive college. She's not just some "dumb character in a dumb show".
My biggest concern is if Jessica Nigri can sing. She might be able to act her way out of a paper bag(key word: might) but if she can't sing well, or Sentai go the stupid route of leaving the songs in the original language, it will be a huge disappointment.
