for a series so old it's kind of surprising that anyone picked it up

I think Sentai likes to save some money by picking up older titles since they probably don't have to worry about outbidding anyone. Of course the flip side is that they risk that people have moved on and don't care anymore. I didn't recognize the title at all, so seeing that it originally came out in 2006 wasn't too surprising.

I have no idea if I'll like this title or not, but I do like the fact that Sentai is willing to "reach back" and snag things that haven't been licensed yet.

I saw Kage Kara Mamoru at an anime club circa 2006. I haven't seen a full episode since then and I don't know if I'd buy it, but the "Banana Song" was cute.
Also, if Sentai is indeed licensing overlooked anime titles from the middle of the last decade, there's always a chance for those of us still pining for the first three seasons of Minami-ke to finally get an official, physical release.

The price point is everything, it is a mediocre show but just as well if the audience is looking for a silly comedy it can fit the bill.
And it features the ludicrous Banana song.

I vaguely remember this one. Cute and harmless, just my type. Count me in if throwing it on BD, even upscaled.

Oh man, I remember this one. It's mediocre, but a fun show. I doubt it would get a BD, and frankly, it would look awful upscaled. It's a very cheap looking show to begin with, and I doubt it was mastered at anything bigger then 480p.

Another minor thing I liked in Kage Kara Mamoru, the obvious homage to the original Ranma 1/2 opening animation in its own opening animation (multiplying characters running in place against a solid colour backgrounds, changing angles as each character is added).

Im scared that this is also a test for Sentai to see if there is a market for older titles. And if fans buy this, then they'll continue getting older shows. Maybe even Higurashi. If no profit? No Higurashi or even Dennou Coil

For me this is fantastic news, I've loved this show and I guess now I can finally get rid of my old fansubs when the actual physical release comes out.
I thought the likelyhood of this ever getting a official release would be slim to none since it was a old show and a Aniplex title.
I have all the manga's too bad it was canceled at volume 6 and the last 3 volumes I had to get the Japanese versions to finish reading it since Dr, Master the publisher went under many years ago.
Now if only the light novels ever got licensed but I'm not holding my breath.

Except that I am pretty certain series such as Higurashi has been on a much higher licensing price bracket than something like Mamoru.

I don't see much risk for Sentai because this license was probably very cheap, and they probably will not produce a dub for it. Even if they only sell 1500-2000 copies, it will probably recoup the investment.
This looks similar to Discotek's business model, and things seem to be working fine for them.

Test? Then I guess they passed that with flying colors:
Ghost Sweeper Mikami
Uta Kata
Kure-Nai
Casshan
It's always safer releasing a short series than a long one:
Eyeshield 21
Gintama
Glass Mask

I would've figured that such an aged series would be a Discotek title.

Ghost Sweeper Mikami, I remember...
I've intended to watch that show on Halloween Month last year, only to find out after unsuccessful Internet searching that only the movie of it had an English version.
