Really liked this show so it's a shame only higher income people can afford it without sacrificing other hobbies

I really wanted to like this show- but then I saw all of it. But yeah, the first five episodes were very charming even if no where as engaging or biting or funny as My Bride is a Mermaid's first five.
Much more charming though. Pleasant. Really disposable, unfortunately.
I know that's not how you meant it, Key, but it did make me laugh. I'd recommend "[]monogatari" myself. |

I'd definitely say that this is one of the more enjoyable shounen harems, and SHAFT has done a great job adapting it. Really liked the visuals for this one, something about them always manages to catch my eyes
1st comment has got to be about prices...  .
I have no job and i'm studying, still I can afford Aniplex releases. Budgeting is a good thing. I don't buy anything from Sentai/Funi, and as such i have plenty over for Aniplex. I don't have multiple hobbies that are money sinks, as such i have plenty over for anime & anime related goods. Instead of complaining other people could do some budgeting as well  .

SouthPacific, my friend, right now every talkback on every Aniplex release will start a discussion about prices.
I'm glad you can afford Nisekoi, and I assume other Aniplex releases as well, for others such as myself the funds I have - very carefully budgeted and vetted by the family CFO (wife) - are happily spent on those Sentai, Funimation, Rightstuf and NISA releases that posses the happy characteristic of being good series and a good value. Is the video on this disc taken from the censored Japanese home video version or the less-censored Japanese broadcast version? (And yes, you read that right. Nisekoi's Japanese BR release was diabolical (link NSFW))
I want to talk about the show itself. Three episodes is all I could tolerate. Shaft and Shinbou's visual style was over the top and incongruous for what was a rather mediocre and by-the-numbers romcom, but even worse, it was like they were only going through the motions. Compare the visuals in this to the visuals of PMMM, Bakemonogatari or SZS and you'll find that Nisekoi looks boring by comparison. Shaft did not bring their A-game, I can tell you that. The mob angle wasn't all that unusual or even interesting, not only in the scenario but also in how it was played out. I certainly didn't find the show funny, nor did I find the interplay between the two leads to be endearing; they were both so obnoxious, asinine and bratty I actually thought they deserved one another. And I wasn't too impressed that there were multiple keys/locket combos; what was up with that? But I dropped the show after I realised that it was just going to descend into harem territory where nothing ever gets done or goes anywhere. Yawn. |

I love me some Nisekoi, but $50 for 5 episodes sub only? No thanks. Even if it was dual audio, I'd still consider that pricey. I'll stick with just my Viz manga unless there's a reasonably priced Australian or UK release. I'm not the biggest fan of Shaft's funky architecture either, especially since the original manga has fairly ordinary backgrounds.
... IDK, maybe I'll consider buying some of season 2 when we have Haru, who is obviously the best girl, on the scene. |

More like none. I'm with dtm here. If you've seen another shaft title from the last few years, then chances are you've seen everything Nisekoi has to offer visually done as well or better. It's just a factory generated romcom that Shinbo farted dust over. |

Nisekoi is a bit of a weird one. It's so painfully generic yet for some reason it's still pretty entertaining. The manga is like that too just with less sparkles and headtilts. There are plenty of shows I absolutely despise for being generic but I just can't bring myself to hate Nisekoi.
Maybe I like it because Chitoge's a cutie, maybe it's because I like the character interactions, honestly I don't know. Although I can say for sure that it's definitely a very big step above something like Infinite Stratos. As for the release itself, $50 for 5 episodes sub only without a soundtrack CD or something is a bit much. But if I were a big fan of the series I'd probably still get it. After all, I've wasted a ton of money importing Love Live Blu-rays. |

How? I do have a job and I can barely afford Kill la Kill. On top of that, I start college in the Spring, so I have no idea how I'll be able to finish collecting the show until I have a long break or something. And I budget my money like crazy. But I have other crap I have to pay for too (insurance?). After I finish buying Kill la Kill I'm never going to buy anything from Aniplex ever again. Their sets are cool and all but I'd have to love a show more than my family to consider buying it. I realized after purchasing the first volume that I didn't love KLK that much, despite my love for it. I wish they'd release more full series, or at the very least half sets. |

Aniplex of America hires the JP authors to use the JP masters for their BDs. This means their discs have the same audio/video as the Japanese discs. |

It's just as South says: really budgeting. Aniplex of America doesn't make sets for people who want to be able to buy 3 games, 2 anime sets, eat out every meal, etc for every month. The typical American consumer has gotten spoiled by companies devaluing everything they produce to cater to that mindset because people complain otherwise. I have a job, I eat well, I afford a gym membership, I go out and do things with friends, but I calculate how much I have to spend on this/that and prioritize what I want. People ignore that this set is $50 for what appears to be every two months for 8 months. That's not a lot of money to save up ($25 per month), but when you continue to add extraneous expenses (like buying shows you just /kinda/ like), it adds up. Check to see what you want to pay for most and buy that. Don't buy what you don't absolutely want and you can suddenly afford these "outrageous" sets as some call them. |

That sounds like expensive series like these are basically demanding your attention and trying to get you to exclude other things. If there were a bunch of shows on home video I'd like to get, but I can't afford them all, the most expensive one will be the first to go (unless it's absolutely packed with bonus stuff), because odds are there will be a show I like as much, better, or slightly less for a much lower price.
I really can't see a higher price for these shows as anything but the company (whether it's Aniplex or the original Japanese branch) taking advantage of its customers. I don't see how doing otherwise is devaluing--lowering your prices without compromising quality is how you deal with competition in most other businesses, and I've always had the impression that the American anime localization business is the same. As a consumer, I want the biggest possible value for the lowest possible price. To pay more for the sake of paying more, or for loyalty to the brand or franchise, is to be suckered, from my perspective. The exception is if one or more companies can consistently undercut other companies but whose quality is unacceptably low, but that isn't the case with anime localization. FUNimation, and sometimes Viz, can put out stuff that's just as high in quality for half or one-third of the price, so why should I buy anything from Aniplex or Sentai? For the record, I have not seen the anime, but I have read a lot of the manga, and Nisekoi is an absolutely middle-of-the-road, take-no-risks series. There is absolutely nothing that stands out to me about the series, nothing memorable, and, most importantly, nothing interesting about it, aside from that it's a cute series about cute characters. At the same time, there isn't anything really bad about the series either. It is Weekly Shonen Jump's most vanilla series I've ever read. Nothing wrong with vanilla as a flavor, of course, especially when executed well, which, if the series's lasting power is any indication, Naoshi Komi IS executing it well. Kind of like Ben & Jerry's Vanilla--though I'd only get it if it was on sale, as $3.99 for a pint of ice cream is too much for me. Unlike with Aniplex though, there is a reason why Ben & Jerry's is more expensive than its competitors (unless the sale is particularly drastic). |

Somehow, this show kind of reminds of Love Hina, which was a real sensation here when it first hit. The idea being: the first time you see one of these wacky anime romantic comedies, it's a breath of fresh air because there's nothing like it in US animation (not much like it in western media at all, I'd assert), but then you discover that it has its own entire genre in anime, and in fact, there are a bunch more just like it. So I totally get someone really liking Nisekoi if they've never seen one of these before, but for everyone else, it's very much "meh". |
