I started to I think Japan couldn't weird me out anymore but then along comes this.... Yeah, I can't even.

I do find it amusing early on in the first video where it looks like a small child is absolutely terrified of Funasshi.

Well, most mascots don't speak:

[quote]

Funassyi (ふなっしー Funasshī?) is a Japanese mascot character, unofficially representing the city of Funabashi, Chiba.
...
Generally, Japanese local mascot characters, known as Yuru-chara (ゆるキャラ laid-back character?) or gotōchi-chara (ご当地キャラ local character), move slowly and do not speak. Funassyi, however, speaks and sometimes shrieks, jumps, and makes violent movements like headbanging.

Well, congratulations to Funassyi for making it to the album charts.

I have to wonder how well of a reception Funassyi has with kids that watch him/her?

When Funassyi first came out, a lot of kids didn't like it, to be honest. They're pretty awkward with them. Example with child actress Tani Kanon, who adored Bari-san, last year.

However, apparently a lot of women like Funassyi a lot. It's pretty evident since Funassyi has been parodied on the show MechaIke and appeared in front of idols like Morning Musume or E-Girls, who fangirl over it.

There was also variety specials where a lawyer who does make a regular appearance on that show, actually has a huge love for the mascot... to the point that she cries whenever she sees it and that she would marry it. >_>

So, based on what I saw in those videos, it seems that the public's reception to Funassyi is...polarizing, somewhat. I can see how Funassyi's hyperactive personality wouldn't sit well with most kids.

I wonder how many of those album sales can be attributed to white elephant gifts. ;p

I really hate this mascot. I don't understand the appeal and why anyone like sit. It's creepy and not cute at all. Sort of like Kobito Zukan, why do people like that?
