That Blu Ray cover art is gorgeous.
I'm severely tempted to import this, but there's a fairly high chance that an art house cinema near me will do a screening some time next year, and seeing a new Ghibli movie for the first time on the big screen is a chance that doesn't come along very often. |

Wow, that's actually sooner than I expected. Pretty exciting. I saw the movie twice in theaters here in Japan, and while it's not quite one of Ghibli's best it was still very, very good - and something about it really lingered with me after seeing it. Some great emotions. Here's hoping this won't be the last new Ghibli movie we see released on home video.

I saw it once in the theater, and while I did enjoy it I wasn't blown away. I'd like to see it again, but I'm not sure yet if I need to own it. I really liked the closing song, which fit the story very, very well. |

What is about titles that Ghibli (aside from the notable names that have worked there/with the studio) works on/helps work on that makes them stand out above other various other studios?

That cover art does look gorgeous. Appropriately gorgeous for what might be Ghibli's last film for a while. :'( No dub then? I guess that means that they haven't finished one yet. Of course I assume they're working on one, because it's Ghibli and the film seems to be perfectly "safe" for Disney to release. Kaguya and The Wind Rises included the dubs on their Blurays. That's why I bought the Kaguya one, because it wasn't playing anywhere near me and I knew it would get a US Bluray release for a while, and I really wanted to watch it (superfluous comment: I loved it). So I don't know if I could justify getting this one if it doesn't include a dub, what with Japan's high prices.
But It looks beautiful, and I've heard good things. Very assuring, especially considering this is the only Ghibli films made without any "official" input by Miyazaki, Takahata or Suzuki. Impressive I'm sure. Yonebayashi clearly has a lot of budding talent, regardless of whether it's different from Miyazaki's own whimsical films. I've heard Marnie has a more depressing tone and outlook (at least from the main character's perspective), but I'm glad that Yonebayashi didn't just try to imitate Hayao's style but instead form his own. Too bad we may not get the chance to see more of that talent in the future. |

Well that's an easy to answer question. Should be obvious. Extremely high quality traditional animation done mostly in-house, soundtracks that are generally beautiful, whimsical stories and characters that people connect with, blah blah blah... I could go on. Artistic integrity? I don't know, Princess Mononoke pretty much changed my life when I was in a really bad spot. And Princess Kaguya most recently made me visibly emotional it was that powerful. |
