In my opinion I think FMA is a sad anime. If you have listen to the stories of how alchemist ruined the lives of people then you will think it a sad anime. Futhermore,Edward Elric is a sad character to me carrying the burden of trying to restore his body and his brother. Also I think Edward is a kid crying for help since the death of his mother. Correct me if I am wrong that how I interpret the anime,its a very emotionol anime

"Sad" is a pretty general word. It's just one of the many side effects of deep drama and plot twists that happens in a lot of anime. I think "melancholy" would probably be a better choice, or maybe even "depressing" if it has that great an effect.
Personally, I can't say because I only saw half the series on Cartoon Network, and that was a long time ago. However, I have all the DVDs now and will watch it from the beginning. Although, I kind of wanted to wait for the movie too, but I preordered the LE set which was pushed back to November, so I may just have to wait a little longer till I can finally watch this series that so many people have hyped these past months  .

I'd call it a 'bittersweet' anime. There's too many silly/happy moments to call it out-and-out 'sad' (C'mon, who doesn't chuckle when Armstrong goes off?)... but at the same time, lots of crappy stuff happens too (spoiler[ the deaths of Nina and Hughes come immedately to mind. ])
In the end, things don't really work out like we'd want them to... but it's not an X the Movie ending either. You leave hopeful for better stuff later- Bittersweet. |

I'd put it around the level of Chrono Crusade. Can be funny, and light hearted at one moment and as cold and dark as the north pole in winter the next. It is tough to really say for sure, I'd say it's to diverse to say for sure but overall I'd agree with Tony and go with "melancholy".

Really? For me the ending of Chrono Crusade is so sad compare to FMA. I really wasn't sad at ending for FMA (movie/tv) rather I found them to be messages of hope. Spoiler throught the end of movie and tv series. spoiler[The ending for the TV series, is one that could be sad, but in my eyes it's a beautiful thing. Brother seperated by other worlds, and yet they reach out for each other knowing that in their hearts they will find one another. As for the movie, I know it's a bit sad that Winry is left alone, but I always thought that the story was about two brothers and how they do anything for each other. So even with Al and Ed away from the Risenbol, they still have each other and that's what matters most.] As for the question at hand no. I honestly think that FMA is a great anime, it's does a great job of balancing drama while adding in bits of comedy. Overall I would not say that the serious is sad, but a testimony to the bonds of brotherhood. Yes there are some extremely sad moments in this anime, but likewise it's feels balanced with the rest of the series. For instance I find that Monster is very sad, the themes and events in this story have left me stun and shock at the abilities (and wickness) of human beings. Till next time, Delta Kiral |

Fullmetal Alchemist certainly had its teary moments, but the series was honestly so heavy-handed with its message and with making sure that the viewers understood "The characters are suffering!" that it was hard to become emotionally involved with anything happening within the anime.
Melodramatic, honestly, best describes Fullmetal Alchemist. Not necessarily "sad". |

For me, Chrono Crusade was worse because the two characters you came to spoiler[love the most died. Ed and Al lived.] I go with melancholy and bittersweet. |

Me too. Some sad, horrible things happen, and it doesn't end at all happily, but it ends with a glimmer of hope. spoiler[Ed and Al are alive, and where there's life...] It's not really as soul-killingly tragic as some other anime I've seen. |

To me it's a mistake that they made and there is consequences to that mistake that they have to live with for a long time, if not the rest of their lives.

To me it was pretty sad ending. spoiler[At the end of the series when the brothers were seperated from each other, and at the end of the movies when Winry was left all alone by the two people she loved the most.] I was wishing that the bittersweet anime cliche (for the ones that i've seen anyway, the number is kinda small next to most of the other people on here) ending of a series wouldn't happen here and that things would work out for once. But still a great series.

Very true, I suppose I wouldn't say they were exactly alike but the combination of two very different elements, with the comedy and the drama, in such an effective way were similar. They didn't end in the same way, but the similarities are still great outside of that. |

Well... it depends how you look at it for me. I never once cried while watching FMA, though I did while watching Voices of a Distant Star, Air (you'd have to be inhuman to not cry for that one though), Elfen Lied, and about 30 other titles; hell, I even teared up a little watching Kamichu! today. FMA just wasn't that kind of show to me.
However, I'd still consider it was one of the most depressing shows I've ever seen. There was some sort of quality that FMA had, probably the relationship between the brothers, that kind of set it apart and above most other shounens in my mind. In a lot of ways I can empathize very well with Ed's character; I'm the kind of person who, in their shoes, would probably do exactly the same thing. Watching someone deal with the often terrible moral and real consequences of their innocent and naive decisions really got to me in a way few other shows have. I watched episodes 1-45 over about 5-6 days, but I honestly couldn't get myself to sit down and watch the last 5-6 episodes because I didn't want to see how it ended. It took me 3 months (I'm not exaggerating) and hearing about the movie to work up the determination to watch them. There's no way this show would have had the impact on me it did if I wasn't the kind of person I am, so I can see how other people don't empathize, but every so once in a blue moon you'll run across a character that is just so similar to you, you can't help but be entranced. (for the record, I hate Ed as a character. though like I said, that may be due to the fact that I hate to see the negative results of decisions I know I probably would have made) |

Sure FMA has its lighthearted and funny moments but do you agree with the fact that most of the major events in the anime is at least depressing.
