So. I recently bought all of the volumes of Princess Tutu, and I LOVE it. Since as a kid I was a big fan of ballet, classical music, and fairy tales (and still am, to an extent), the anime is one of my favorites! I'm currently starting to rent more on Netflix, so I'd like some recommendations of anime I might want to check out.
While it doesn't nessisarily have to be a "fairy tale" type anime, (and it certainly doesn't have to be a ballet anime...are there even any other ballet animes out there?  ), I would like to see something in that style or 'feel'. Fullmetal Alchemist is another one of my favorites--it's not really *that* close to Princess Tutu, but it has the same sort of 'dark' feel to it without ever getting too depressing, as well as a fantasy setting, interesting characters, and an involving plot, if that makes sense. Other animes I've watched/am watching that kinda make me think along the same lines are Gankutsuou (although it's certainly MUCH darker than Tutu), Pretear and DNAngel (although neither are as complex or deep as Tutu, but they do have a similar 'feel' to the shows, as well as the magical girl/boy trappings).
I know Princess Tutu is unique, so this is a little harder to nail down...but quite a few of the animes in my Netflix queue right now are sort of madcap comedies, so I'd like an anime that's similar in feel to Tutu to balance it out. ^^; |

If you ever get bored, you might want to put up a MyAnime list (or just make your current one public). It's great for when you need recommedations.
Anyway, I personally haven't seen Princess Tutu just yet. However, the first DVD (from Netflix) is downstairs waiting for me to find time to watch it. ^_- However, whenever I've told people I'm a fan of Revolutionary Girl Utena, the first words out of their mouths these days are, "So, have you seen Princess Tutu yet?" I would assume that this question could go in reverse, and therefore, I'll throw out the idea (like I so frequently do) that you consider watching Revolutionary Girl Utena if you haven't already. It's a show that has a little of everything, and a lot of some things. It has a fairy tale basis, with a young girl comforted by a brilliant prince after the death of her parents (don't worry, that's not a spoiler) who then promises to find her again someday. Of course, that's at the point where the fairy tale takes a sharp right turn, with the girl deciding to become a prince herself, rather than pining away for her hero. The bulk of the story (that opening bit is just, well, the opening bit) takes place in the Ohtori Academy. The show is filled with swordfights, deception, drama, romance, angst, comedy, hatred, love, confusion... And not to mention a great deal of symbolism and the potential for some really deep discourse of the meaning of scenes. However, even people who don't delve deeper can probably find quite a bit to enjoy. Anyway, I know I recommend this show pretty frequently, but only when I feel it truly fits what the person is looking for. And from what I've been told about Princess Tutu, and what you seem to be asking for, I think it's a good fit in this case. |

I'm sorry to say that Princess Tutu is a unique series. If there is anything else close to it in anime, I have yet to run across it. (Which may be part of the reason why isn't hasn't sold well.)
I've seen most of Utena, and it's really totally different. |

While it doesn't go quite as dark, Cardcaptor Sakura gives me the same feeling that Princess Tutu does.

If we're talking about "feel," then I totally suggest Kaleido Star (which Junichi Sato was also a part of).
You know those parts of Tutu where you just have to smile because it makes you real happy? Like... those dynamic sequences of ballet, for example, that just warms up your heart when you witness a duck/girl transcend her somewhat lowly place in the world and is able to transform? Well, Kaleido Star has a lot of that [feeling]... though, just about everyone technically starts out as a huge douche... but man, when it gets happy, it gets REALLY happy. You'll melt into your chair, like "god damn! I can't believe how happy, yet so not sappy/cheesy that is." KS is awesome! |

Sorry to disappoint you, but I have to agree with what Key said. It's very difficult, if not impossible to find an anime series that is similar to Princess Tutu. You mentioned on your post that one of the series that you watched was Pretear. Well, there is a common denominator between Tutu and Pretear - they were both directed by Junichi Sato. If you are interested in watching more of Sato's work, then I would suggest Kaleido Star (which DKL already suggested) and Magic User's Club, two very good (and underrated) series that he directed. |

Yeah, I figured Princess Tutu was pretty unique, but I thought I'd check to see if there's anything i missed. ^^
I think I'll have to check out more of Sato's stuff...if he did both Tutu AND Pretear, there must be something there. Plus, the trailers for Kaleido Star have gotten me interested...I think I'll give it a try. ^^ |

^^;; No, no, I wasn't questioning it. I was using an 'if...then' thing. If he did both Tutu and Pretear (both of which I like, although Tutu much more than Pretear), then I definantely should check out Kaliedo Star, for example. I guess I should've said "SINCE he did"? Oh well. Sorry, now I"m confusing myself.

I would highly recommend checking out Magic User's Club if you're going for some other Junichi Sato-directed anime. It's still one of my all-time favorites, and I like encouraging people to check it out. :)
It's got a lot of the same staff as Tutu (Tutu's original creator did the character designs for Magic User's Club, so characters look similar), though the series is quite different from Tutu. More of a romantic comedy style show, but a very fun one with likeable characters and some great music (same composer as Fullmetal Alchemist). |
