I know there is a thread about the dub of Bleach, but I figured this would get lost in all the discusssion. I've read the review of it here on ANN, and seen the preview for it on Adult Swim, but I can't get a grasp of what the heck this show is about.

It sort of sounds like a modern day Inuyasha. By that I mean it sounds like it is a monster-of-the-week, supernatural, fighting anime where the story never seems to come to any real conclusion. I got REALLY sick of Inuyasha after about the 60th episode and don't think I'd be interested in investing time in another series like it.

So, what is the scoop? Is there a running plot with some sense of resolution? Is there more to it than just fighting new monsters each episode? What's it all about?

Thanks.

It's basically monster-of-the-week for the first 14 or so episodes, and starts off pretty episodic and standalone. After that, however, they travel to "another world" (you'll find out what that means when you get there) for a particular purpose, and the series ceases to be episodic from there. After that point is exciting plot, drama, conspiracy, lots of fighting, and doubt of loyalty. And yes, it is pretty much one continuous arc for pretty much 40-50 episodes. After that, it moves into filler (I'm not sure what it's about, I've not watched the anime, I have only read the manga), but I've heard that the filler is halfway decent.

As frentymoon said, the real plot kicks in after 10 episodes or so. Then things get real interesting. It is a very good show, one of my favorites....obviously Wink

I read the manga and watch the anime, so I would recommend it if you like naruto. It's similar to that type of show. Personally I kinda like it a little more than Naruto at this point because Bleach seems to develop more of the characters. I think you'll like it though, so give it a shot. You'll know by episode 17 or 20 for sure whether you're going to really like it or not. After that, you will not be let down.

Bleach is a show about a 15-year-old named Ichigo who becomes a shinigami and battles against supernatural beings from another world. Its genre is acually action, comedy, fantasy, drama, supernatural.

There shouldn't be any problem with you running out of interest. It is a very well done series. Probably the only shonen series at the moment that interests me.

Plus, if you like manga, the manga is very well done as well.

P.S. - It's a lot better than Inuyasha.

Actually, I would personally disagree that the characters are developed more in Bleach. I do think it is probably an overall better show than Naruto as it is aimed at an older audience, but it seems like there's a huge section of the cast that gets absolutely no attention to character development. Maybe they're just really shallow characters and there's nothing to develop on, but when you combine them into a group of pretty one-dimensional people, it comes across as one of the weakest groups I can think of. I found myself pretty bored to tears at times watching anything that didn't involve anyone named "Ichigo", "Yorouichi", "Yachiru", "Rukia", "Hinamori" or any of the captains (which admittedly isn't that much time, but I felt I should mention it since I felt like I had to "trudge" through those parts to get to the good stuff). Hmm.... thinking about it, maybe those parts weren't that bad by themselves, it's probably more that they were just not the really intense action or story.

Looking just at the main arc of the anime, I would give the show a 95, and looking only at the parts involving the characters listed above, maybe a 98 or 99. It is absolutely phenomenal.

basically starts off as Inuyasha, and then turns into Dragonball Z. which kinda bugged me as it seems like they completely lost sight of what the story was actually about: being a Shinigami.

Inuyasha starts: Kagome falls down a well and gets stuck in the past, finds Inu Yasha stuck to a tree. She frees him, and a jewels that was in her gets smashs to millions of pieces.

Bleach starts: Ichigo sees ghost called Hollow, and wakes up one night to see Rukia fighting one of them. She gets trashed, Ichigo steps in and becomes a "Shinigami" in her place.

How do they start alike? Please tell me becasue I might be missing some really deep, hidden message becasue it is lost to me.

How does it becomes Dragonball Z? If any series out there right now more Dragonball like, it would be Naruto.

I love Bleach, but I won't lie, it's just a regular shonen series, an extremely well done one though.

What V1icious meant is that it starts with Ichigo just fighting monster(like Inuyasha) then it becomes mostly one on one fights(like DBZ). That doesn't mean the series is bad in any way though. It's one of the most entertaining examples of the genre. And I suggest sticking with the manga instead of the anime, since the anime has some fugly ass character designs(compared to the manga).

The DBZ aspects are pretty much all in the fights - and the Bleach fights are kinda DBZ/shonen cliched. By that I mean a lot of them are episodes worth of build up. Then Ichigo gets beaten up a bit. Ichigo unlocks 'super saiyan equivalent' in the knick of time. Then when everyone is too strong for 'level 1 super saiyan' Ichigo luckily discovers a next level of power that he can unlock!!!

However, the Bleach story line after about episode 14 is not episodic monster-of-the-week and it has some really involving and well done story arcs. I haven't seen Inuyasha so I can't compare it to that though...

No, what I think he means by it becoming like DBZ is that it's basically just Ichigospoiler[ going around, able to beat everyone he fights (except for Aizen, but he doesn't count) just because he's (in a way) unique ](like Goku, with the exception of Cell). But I may be wrong..... Only v1cious would know what he meant by what he said.

As for the Inuyasha comparison, I haven't watched Inuyasha the beginning of the series, so I can't make a valid explanation.

It should be added that despite the DBZness, there's substantial plot besides the fights(unike DBZ) that keep you interested and that add an extra oomph for the reasons behind the fights(as in, it's not just "the monster, who just came out of nowhere and has no bearing on the rest of the story is gonna destroy the world, let's kill him!!")

yeah that's exactly what i meant. the show started with more of an adventure aspect, and then it became all about the fights. don't get me wrong it's still a decent series... i just wish it would have stuck more to it's original premise to spice things up a bit.

More than anything else, the first arc or so of Bleach reminded me of Shakugan no Shana.

I'm thouroughly enjoying Bleach personally. It's a great shounen series along the lines of Rurouni Kenshin and Yu Yu Hakusho in that it's made for older teens. More bllood, complicated storyline, etc. It's pretty much a monster of the week series until they kick things off with the introduction of Ishida (episode 11) which triggers some events, and then things start to get really interesting when the main story begins (episode 16). Of course if you're anything like me it'll hook you with episode 2, and said monster of the week episodes serve to really build up the main characters so I didn't mind them, it's not like they're at all boring or anything either. Hope all of that is helpful.
