WOW! I can't believe something like this actually happened. I hope that the person that stole those cels gets what is theirs. He could have simply asked about buying them from TOEI, and not steal them. He is dumb for doing that in the first place. He should have realized that sooner or later he'd be caught. What is everyone else's opinion on this?

Speaking with people in the industry who have done cel work for Toei in Asia. Sailor Moon, DBZ, etc. They were always surprised at the secondary market for cels.
Since cels are treated like garbage in the studio once the were done using them. Artist would have stacks and stacks of cels around their desk, at home, where ever they worked.
I would really like to know the detail of this 36 year old that "stole" the cell. I know a whole bunch of artist in asia with 20 year old cells from DBZ that Toei commissioned for in between work. If the definition is too vague. Toei can sue a small army of artist that use to work for them.
Anyways cel animation is going the way of the 8-track.

Have they charged the guy with theft? If they have charged and convicted him, then it's my understanding that the law requires the cels to be returned. You know, kinda like on Law&Order, and they go into a pawn shop and confiscate some jewelry cause it was involved in a theft? Why then would they have to sue?

This reminds me of the scene in Otaku no Video where they interview the cel thief. It would seem to indicate that this is nothing new and that studios have just turned a blind eye to the fact in the past.

Ah yes, Otaku no Video. I knew the story reminded me of something. Of all the things that happened in the ONV interviews, that was the one scene that I thought couldn't happen because it seemed to be the most over-the-top. Shows you what I know. (nothing)

Has anyone said what scenes were on the Sailor Moon cels? Cause I was thinking that he might have stolen cels of scenes that were cut out of the tv show and were never ment to be seen. Or the cells could have been early character designs, like when one of the otaku in OtakuNo video stole designs of the upcoming Macross movie.
