So I was watching Eureka Seven and saw that thing that really drives me crazy... The infamous "Pink Explosion." Now, we've all seen this before, such as the recent Gundam shows ( ie. Seed, Destiny, etc), but what is the point?
Is is supposed to be "cute" so that girls watch it, or maybe non-violent looking magic "poof" cloud that everyone gets saved at the end? I just don't get it. E7 gets pretty graphic at points in the series and it doesn't seem to pan out with the latter of my two hypothesis, but really, what is the point? If anyone knows more on this then I would be in your debt. Thanks. |

I always just figured we didn't know what was in those things so who knows what happens when one explodes.

I've heard—though don't quote me on it—that there's actually some semi-scientific explanation for explosions being pink in space. Something about the lack of air makes the actual explosion reaction chemically different, I dunno. I hated Chemistry.
However, I've also heard that the original Mobile Suit Gundam used pink explosions because the animators had a metric shit-ton of pink cel paint left over and had to dump it off somehow. And given how influencial Gundam's proven on every single mecha anime to come out since, that probably carried over as a "tradition" kind of thing. |

This is a site caled the Physics of Coloured Fireworks. Na=Sodium, Cl=Chlorine, Ca=Calcium, SR=Strontium, CU=Copper, Ba=Barium, OH is Hydrogen and Oxygen in an ionic bond called Hydroxyl. This is what makes pH go up, it is what makes lye and lime so caustic. Pink would be a mixture of elements. I have seen real pink explosions, but the basic charge was either gas or gunpowder. Of course it was but one of the resultant colors. |

I'm not surprised, since in E7 most of the planet is supposed to be covered by some corral like material and the air is filled with energy...what's a few odd colored explosions?!?

All explosions are created equal, and if something were to blow up does it really matter what color it is? As long as we're at it why don't we complain about the lack of shrapnel and how even non-explosive things go up like nukes in anime. It's just fiction and should be taken as such.
Not to say that trying to determine the composition of the explosive object in question isn't scientifically intriquing that is.

Pink explosions don't bother me anywhere as much as beam weapons that travel slower than the speed of light. This is an anime convention that I've seen in countless shows, where a light based weapon travels at a speed slower than a conventional projectile. This seems true from small hand guns, to full out colony lasers. This is common practice in Hollywood as well, where blasters fire bolts of light that fly across the screen at slower than arrow flight speed.

I especially love the ones that start from the rear of a ship and bend toward the target in front of the ship! See one of the Gall Force series among others. |
