Here's the answer from its Wikipedia article spoiler[With war brewing, Hiroki and Takuya eventually return to their old home near the border having stolen the still comatose Sayuri. The boys finish building their plane just as war finally breaks out. Takuya had previously injured his arm, thus he leaves Hiroki to pilot the plane and fulfill their childhood promise. Hiroki manages to fly the plane across the strait to the Tower carrying Sayuri and a missile provided by Uilta. As Sayuri finally awakens while the plane circles the Tower, the Tower activates and immediately begins to swallow the surrounding area. In the last few minutes of her coma, Sayuri realised that when she awoke she would lose all memory of her previous life with her love, Hiroki, and thus upon waking she is in floods of tears. Flying back, Hiroki fires the missile destroying the Tower and stopping its expansion, followed by a scene involving the crying Sayuri, where Hiroki vows that they shall start anew, ending the movie.

It is unclear exactly what follows, though it is implied near the beginning of the movie that Southern Japan and Hokkaido were eventually reunified, and both Hiroki and Takuya survived. Whether or not Sayuri survived the destruction of the Tower that she was linked to is open to interpretation.]

Good romantic movie.
