Macross has come up in a couple of threads, and admittedly, I'm a fanboy in regards to the show-- all the threads got me thinkin' about the new ADV dub. I haven't gotten the new dub yet, and have heard/read both ecstatic reviews, and pretty scathing reviews. For those who have seen it, what are your opinions?
How does Minmey come across, being voiced by a non-native-english speaker? I heard Lisa sounds much younger too... etc etc I have the Robotech collection for Macross, and I have Animeigo's remastered Japanese-language DVDs, which I love..... I've wanted to rent the new ADV release, but I haven't found anyone doing so yet (online or otherwise). If the dub isn't very good, I don't see much reason to get the new release, as they didn't re-do the Japanese track with better sound like they did with the English track. And the video is the same as the Animeigo re-mastered video. Basically, getting the new DVD pretty much solely depends on the dub for me. I'm not a dub hater, but I'm pretty picky-- I like the Ghibli releases, Vampire Hunter D, Bebop, etc. but not a whole heck of a lot else. I know there are a few extras too, but I just don't have a few hundred bucks right now to throw around on shows that I already have two copies of.

well i have the robotech series which only comes in dub which is cool. im a dub man really and robotech can be quite funny at times in english, i quote "well i'll be darned" who says that!?! lol

I've gotten to see episodes 4-6 since I did my review back in December, but they haven't changed my opinion. It is a competent dub whose script stays reasonably close to the original (except during songs), probably enough to satisfy those who normally favor dubs but unlikely to win over the dedicated sub crowd.
As for the gimmick with Mari Ijima? It's more debatable how effective that is. It does give a distinctly foreign flavor to her speech patterns that's nearly impossible to artificially reproduce, which fits the character. Her acting chops are right for the role but not especially exciting. (Not surprising, since this was the first time in more than 20 years that she'd voiced an anime.) The songs work well, though. (Also not surprising, since she was a "name" singer in Japan in the intervening years.) |

I will try to sum up some things I mentioned on other threads. The translation for both the sub and dub is well researched. The translator is interviewed on both the first and second disc. He explains little otaku jokes like the Studio Nue building and the General Products ad. It is hard for me to be objective on the voices themselves since I rarely watch dubs. I really find Mari Iijima english Minmay a bit odd at times, since I really liked her original performance. Most of the proper names, unlike some other dubs I've seen, are well pronounced. The narrator/Claudia in particular does a very good job. I think the voice for Hikaru is the English Edward Elric. He has a very entertaining audio commentary with IIjima on the second disc. The extras are really cool. The 5.1 mix isn't too impressive. For the most part it channels the dialogue through the center and music through the sides. If you are familiar with ADV's 5.1 remixing of the 2.0 Kino's Journey, Peace Maker, or Chrono Crusade you will have a general idea what to expect. It isn't really immersive like the amazing 5.1 remixes of Bebop, or Evangelion which I find well worth repurchasing.

So is this the same series that was originally released a while back? If it is, is it worth it for those of us who have already seen it? Are there extra scenes added? I always felt the dog-fights could have been done a whole lot better with less recycled footage.

Which series that was released a while back? Are you talking about Robotech? This isn't Robotech. This is the original Macross without the changes that Harmony Gold made to adapt it into Robotech. Macross was released in a subtitled-only format by AnimEigo, and the license was fairly recently transferred to ADV, who made the first proper dub for Macross and is releasing it now. No extra scenes have been added, but everything that was cut out for Robotech has not been cut out of this. And recycled footage is something you'll have to live with in anime, especially in something made in the 70s and 80s like Macross. |

Something I've been never able to figure out is exactly what Harmony Gold did... I've heard that two related series, and a third, unrelated series were all cut together to form Robotech. So far, I've only watched the first Robotech series, and the scenes that showed up late in the series regarding the Masters seemed to have a bit different style than the rest of the show. Did HG interweave scenes from two or all three series to provide overlap across all three Robotech series? I'd appreciate someone explaining what the editing consisted of, or pointing me to an old thread that did explain it. |

All three of the series were unrelated. They weren't so much cut together as re-written as different sagas under the central theme of Robotech. Scenes of nudity and extreme violence (blood) were cut out to conform to TV standards. I'm not sure if anything else was cut or if any major events were changed due to the cuts. I haven't actually seen much of Robotech myself. I've only seen the original Macross and part of Southern Cross. |

There is one difference that I've noticed so far. In the scene in episode one where Minmay is arguing with that little relative (forgot his name, Yuchan maybe) while Hikaru and Roy are watching there is music playing in the original Japanese track. Oddly enough there isn't any music in the English version of this scene. I spotted this right away being fairly familiar with the first episode of Macross in Japanese, but I'm less versed in the following dozen. Another interesting thing is that the Cassini Division which is located in Saturn's Rings (named after astronomer Jean D. Cassini) is translated into the Cassini Divide. Although not a major translation flaw, I find it odd that ADV mistranlated this astronomy term since they are being extra careful with the translation.
