Sometimes, our favorite anime can come to us mid series, or we may have known that it was gonna steal our attention from the beginning. But what about something that you just saw and said "lol, this is about this thing that I like. Minus well give it a try!" Or, maybe it was just really pretty looking and it turned out to be a really standout show with great animation. Ok, and now's when I tell my (kinda embarrassing) story about one of my favorites. Wolves are probably my favorite animal of all time. So, long ago, I was a wee tike (like, 9) and saw the AS bumpers for Wolf's Rain and thought "dfnlasjfl I must see this". It was not till a few months ago when I saw it at my local FYE that I thought "Oh cool! This thing! I love wolves... why not give it a shot!". What I thought was initially a silly, impulsive buy turned out to be one of the most complex and enjoyable masterpieces I've ever seen. I'm just glad that I was able to enjoy it as a *semi* adult ^^'; dun know what I would have thought if I had seen it at that age.
Anyway, tell ye tales.

Okay okay, I got a good one - for my favorite anime Princess Tutu.

There is this one LJ community that I was pretty active in during 2007 called fandom secrets. During my time there, multiple secrets were posted that mentioned PT, so it was on my radar, but it wasn't until one specific secret was posted that I got really interested and searched the series out.

The basic gist of the secret was, "Because of the way Fakir's name is pronounced in Japanese and because of what happens in a later episode, I can't help but secretly think of Fakir as a giant tree f***er."

I was like, okay, I gotta check this series out now. Anime hyper

I never saw the famous AMV (slightly spoilerific) until after I watched the series. Nope. I was intrigued with giant tree f***ers.

I was first attracted to Studio Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart because I... well... I liked the cover art on Disney's DVD release. Seriously. I saw the cover art and thought to myself: "I want to buy this!"

Of course, being a Studio Ghibli movie it wasn't like I was taking a big risk with a total blind buy, but still, it's a pretty lame reason to buy a show. And, to make matters worse, the scene depicted on the cover doesn't actually occur in the movie.

Fortunately, Whisper of the Heart turned out to be one of my favorite anime movies. And I still love the cover!

I was on a PT livejournal community as well. Have you seen serika-san's HIlarious icons that she makes?
Your post totally reminded me of one:
spoiler[The icon is of the scene where Fakir was inside/part of the tree with Tutu hugging it and serika-san put a little sign on the branch that says, "PLEASE DO NOT MOLEST THE TREE MAN".]
HAHAHAHAHAHA
That girl is the best Princess Tutu fan ever. Anime hyper

I love serika-san! I follow her on photobucket and I still keep up with the Princess Tutu lj community. I really like the Princess Tutu community - there are several active members, many of them who are long-time fans... mangaka_chan, lunasphere, moonshadowmagic, etc.

Yes, she has done several hilarious icons. One of my favorite is her Ahiru one where she keeps wracking up damage points as if in a video game. Anime hyper

Have you read the fan light novel This Pendant Heart? If not, I recommend it. I view it as an unofficial follow-up of the anime (it stays loyal to the heart of the series) and is one of my favorite fan creations for PT. Mangaka_chan and lunasphere ended up doing a limited release printing of the story with all of the images, and I bought one a few years ago.

Ditto x10. Also, check out the video I posted in my first post. It's a bit spoilerish, but everything goes by so fast you probably won't be able to make sense of it. But it tends to be one of the biggest motivators to get people to start watching the series.

I should go back....I haven't been on there in ages...but it's good it's still active!

Missed out on it but I'd love to read it. Anime hyper If they ever re-release it, I'd gladly pay money for it.

..........as for that AMV...I used to watch it over and over and over and over....and I got addicted to the song as well. I want to learn Swedish now because of that AMV Haha!

Same thing with Nausicaa: I though that the cover looked cool and I didn't have any idea of what I would watch, since it was one of the first adult anime I watched (though I had watched Ghost in the Shell as a kid I didn't remember much).

It still is one of the best movie posters ever made, it screams epic:

It is also interesting how this poster reflects/defines many of the tropes associated with anime as that image alone shows: a strong, serious, armed (with a huge rifle & sword), cute and pretty female protagonist, fanservice (very slight in this case), elements of science fiction & fantasy and a general epic quality. These are all tropes that characterize the stereotype of anime. That image was Miyazaki's favorite poster from the several ones he drew and it shows as it reflects very well the substance of the movie.

We need an updated Best Anime AMV thread, sometime when we get around to it.

Think some of us fans actually ENJOY showing it to people who think they know what the title is about. Wink
I, OTOH, already knew what to expect from Junichi Sato's name in the title, not to mention this was the glory days when ADV still did podcasts with extended plot previews of series, so we could know what to expect. (To tie in with the "Anime Boom" thread.)

As for my unusual reasons, would have to go back to the very birth of US anime:
I'd seen bits of the Dirty Pair, but had to go out and get one bootleg of Project Eden just for culty east-vs.-west cartoon-fan bragging rights: Ie., "Oh really, you're saying Cheetara's the sexiest babe in 80's toons?... Wink "
But that's how it was for most first-timers back then...The more refined appreciation came later.

Yeah, wolves are unavoidable, aren't they.
I had no clue what Wolf's Rain was about when I started watching it, nor did I care. It had wolves. Very Happy My partner was just browsing youtube videos for new anime to watch and said: "Oh, look, there's one with wolves." What started as an arbitrary choice by coincidence turned into a favorite of both of us. Sometimes it's beneficial to be simple minded, I guess.

Not a silly reason for watching something, but for not watching, maybe. I would never have watched Princess Tutu if it were not for this forum. The title? Nope. Magical girl settings in general? Not really. But you get curious when people repeatedly mention and praise something that looks so very trivial. All it would have needed to convince me on the spot would have been one of those awesome quotes like spoiler["Good evening, prince. The entrance to the story is over there."] And I'd immediately have known this was for me. But I am glad I watched it in complete innocence and could let it unfold all of his charm and depth right before my eyes. Result as of now: 2 full fansub watches within 2 weeks time while impatiently waiting for my DVD set to arrive from overseas to commence 3. watch with said wolves-encountering partner who, I am sure, will love it to bits, best friend already hooked and even convinced to record a German fandub with other friends at some point in the future (every child and adolescent in my family needs to see this show, therefore I need a German dub, which doesn't exist), AMV in the making (first one ever). Yes, I admit to being wrong for thinking "this looks silly". It has completely and wholeheartedly enchanted me.

I'm pretty new to anime, so mostly I just check out various top lists based on votes (such as the one on this site).

For some reason, sometimes the show I want to watch the most is the one I feel the most skeptical about. When the description sounds like something I wouldn't usually like much, but there are so many people who love it, there must be something I'm missing.

This has helped me free myself from prejudice, since most of the times I really liked what I saw, therefore I probably learned more about myself. I feel I've changed more than I would have if I had watched shows/movies that I felt I'd probably like anyway.

Faye Valentine looked damn good in those yellow shorts, and yes, her character was the reason I watched the series. Didn't know a thing about it because, back then, I saw the video's flyer first.

She'll always be one of my favorites.

This aside, the biggest silly reason to watch a good show, or any show for that matters, still goes to "blind buying".

Thank goodness those days are long gone.

I think the silliest I can think of is Book of Bantorra, which I ardently wanted to watch for ages because the protagonist reminded me of Yu Kanda from D. Grayman. Of course my biggest disappoinment came when I realized that protagonist was actually a woman. My illusions were killed. Though Bantorra isn't exactly an amazing show, it was still better than I expected it to be.

And of course, only god knows the amount of anime I've watched just because it had a lot of yaoi doujinshis, only to end up liking the show really much (Tiger & Bunny, Hitman Reborn, Kuroko no Basket, to name a few)

Because the description of Astarotte's Toy could not sound any more wrong. What with a 23 year old man joining the harem of a 10 year old succubus who happens to be the same age as his daughter.

I decided to watch Zero no Tsukaima after watching its abridged series. If you are not aware, abridged series tend to modify the plot into silly directions.

I started watching Psycho-pass because the girl Akane resembled a bloodhound. In particular, the one named Droopy.

I watched Moonphase for the kitty ears. Really, that was the image on Hulu, Hazuki wide-eyed with kitty ears. Girl in a gothic dress, moon, kitty ears. And after watching the first episode, vampires. No, wait, vampires. This was from protohulu back before they discovered "descriptions".

I watched School Rumble thinking it was a fighting show. I think, maybe. It wasn't what I thought... Also old hulu.

I first watched Strike Witches for its alternative WWII backdrop. That sounds like a normal reason but it really isn't.

I saw the first episode of Shuffle! and I hated it. I decided to watch the second episode half a year later and fell in love with the series when Asa showed Rin the bestest hiding spot in the world. I then watched the rest of the series following her, the girl not part of the premise. Ha, for oh so many reasons...

There's still anime that's easier and cheaper to buy then any other method of viewing. I blind buy OOP anime/SAVE titles at around 8-10 dollars a pop, usually around 10 titles a year.

If it's a dubbed DVD {making it more accessible than single language streams} and it's cheaper than renting then it's the simplest answer for pure viewing choice.
