I just watched volume 4 and this was surprisingly a great series. I think I remember reading in this forum that there is more than the initial 13 episodes and I´m wondering if anyone knows what it´s about. I still don´t get the ending though but was spoiler[Lucy the one standing behind at the gate when the clock went off?] Does this get answered on the movie/OVA, if there is one. What was up with spoiler[The leader of the group researching the Dyclonis with having horns in his head. Seems to me that they were the ones to spread the ¨discease¨ to begin with. Why didn´t Lucy attack Kurama at the begining? ] I thought all this would have gotten explained at the end but it didn´t so am I going to have to read the manga for this info? Is there a manga?

Well, I will help with what I can.

spoiler[ At the end, the clock starts working right as you see the shadow standing at the door. Also, right before this you saw Lucy fighting a bunch of soldiers and loose her other horn. (The other was lost in her battle with the little girl in the wheelchair, forgot her name) So I gather that one, she has gotten rid of the things which caused all her problems at the start (the flashback of her childhood when she was picked on for being different, aka the horns) and the clock started marking a new beginning for her or something along those lines. The ability to begin a normal life, something that was stolen away from her. Also leaves open thoughts of a sequel with the loose ends, hey I can hope. ] As for the other episode that wasn't released, it is an episode that is inbetween 10 and 11 if I remember. It shows a flashback of how Lucy got caught and explains why she wouldn't kill Kurama, along with other standard episode stuff. Thats the extend of my knowledge, hope others can help you with the rest.

The story contunes in the manga.
spoiler[ It was Lucy at the Gate, and the Nyu personalty is gone]

With the amount of story left in the manga, another 26 episodes could have been done, but the seres would have gotten repitive and chesey. They picked a very good place to stop.

I'll admit to a bit of shame in that department...I heard about its existence and downloaded a fansub...I know I know...shame on me.

but if you want to know what happens I'll tell you.

the mood of that episode is lighthearted at the beginning and it does fit in between 10 and 11 but not too neatly.

spoiler[first it shows Nana trying to fit in and live alongside Lucy, she competes with her in being the best at cleaning the house and such(because Kouta said that only people who help out and stay, though I get the feeling he doesn't really mean that). Lucy is far better than Nana at this and Nana gets into an argument with Kouta and Yuka and she runs off. She then reaches the beach on which Bandoh is hiding(he is obsessively cleaning it of debris so nothing can be thrown at him when he fights Lucy, he even threatens to shoot someone who does litter it) and Nana tells him he has found Lucy and can bring her to him(the deal they made earlier in the series). She rushes off back and takes Lucy out for a walk 'to get to know her better' or something like that. They are on their way to the beach when it starts to rain and Nana is feeling very guilty because Nyuu is so utterly harmless and kind(Nyuu shares a snack she brought with her) and doesn't know what to do. Nyuu slips on the wet stones and hits her head and Lucy takes over but she remains unconscious reliving her memories. (this is why Lucy doesn't kill Kurama, I've yet to find a reason why the boss person has horns) We see Lucy as a young girl hiding with another girl(who is not a diclonious) they ae friends and look like they have run off together for some reason or other(I cant remember if they say one but there might be one). Kurama and he bosses son(I think its him anyway) lead a largish task force to capture them, they know Lucy is a diclonious but they dont know if the other girl is or not, Lucy gave this other girl(as a sign of friendship) her hat which she dutifully puts on hiding if she has horns or not. The task force attacks and Lucy protects them both without difficulty until one sneaky soldier sneaks round to attack from the side where Lucy cant see him, he shoots the girl with lucy and Lucy immediately stops to see if she is alright. Kurama steps up and makes a deal, he will try to save this human girl with all his power if Lucy submits to capture, Lucy agrees and Kurama tries his hardest to save the girl but she dies(I assume she was shot in the lung so that she would have been particularly difficult to save because we know Kurama has some pretty high tech stuff and well trained staff and I also trust that Kurama did try as he seems trustworthy enough) and Kurama tells Lucy that despite his best efforts the girl died. Lucy thanks him for his efforts and tells him she wont kill him. After this we return to the real world and Nana has dragged Lucy under shelter in some temple thing, Kouta, Mayu and Yuka find them and bring them back home. Nana apologises, finds something she can do(feed wanta...where did he come from, that other girl took him away from Mayu didn't she?) and Kouta presents her with a set of clothes all for her to show that she is part of their family.(He had actually bought these clothes for her before they had the argument that led to Nana running to see Bandoh but he didn't get the chance to give them to her)]

well that should cover everything, I dont think you can get it other than via fansubs so if you dont like the practise then that should tide you over.

It seemed a bad place to stop the anime if you can't read Japanese and don't have access to the original manga. I felt for sure that ADV would release the manga version also, seeing as how they made such a muck of things with their manga releases and now they tend to only release manga based on their anime line. I thought the anime was great except for spoiler[Lucy being forgiven by Kohta for killing his sister and his father. I think that if you saw your family mutilated into puzzle pieces and found yourself covered in their blood, there would be a little more anger here. How could he wake up in the morning every day and be in the same house his sister's murderer? No matter how badly Lucy was treated, it didn't justify the serial killings she perpetrated as a child BEFORE she was put through all the experiments. She SHOULD have suffered for killing all those people. Now, after someone shoots cannonballs at you for a couple of years, I can see how THAT might tick you off! Very Happy

Also, one question, or observation: What was the deal at the end of Volume 4 when Kohta is hugging Lucy and he's saying that he doesn't want her to go....At one point she sorta jerks back and blushes and her face goes a little weird, almost in ecstasy. What was that exactly? Was it a feeling of love since Kohta was forgiving her? SHE was feeling love? Or it seemed to be a more erotic thing? Like she was aroused by that feeling of contact. ]

she has been forgiven by the only person she actually cared about. That would make most people happy I also think that that is the first time that Kouta held Lucy rather than Nyuu so that was potentially the first serious emotional contact she had ever felt in her life.

also as for your other point we cant assume that the mind of a diclonius works the same as a humans, they have that extra part of their brain which allows them to control their vectors and we dont know what other differences in their brain might be or what effects that could have upon their psyche. So Lucy had been bullied and laighed at by people she thought were the same as her as well as disliked by the staff at the care home, the first thing she emotionally invested herself into was killed right infront of her after she was betrayed by the first person whom she trusted(is it just me or did that girl seem to enjoy watching the dog die? I could have sworn her mouth crooked up into a smile near the end of that but).

We know that power corrupts, but what about power in the hands of a girl who felt betrayed and disgusted by 'humans' remember also that the diclonius had the drive to pass on their genes and eradicate humans built into them. Remember we are told that the diclonius kill their families even without provocation so we know they must have some built in mental condition.

that gives a reason for the killings before her experimentation.

Hentai4me gives a pretty good summary of the OVA episode--it is more or less episode 10.5, and does answer the question in the second spoiler tag (of the original post in this thread). After watching episode 11 again on Friday, I'll say that there is some overlap in the events of "10.5" and 11.

I'll probably get the fansub but It's not a priority considering I was hoping this movie was an extension of the series not an in-between episode.

Thank you Advent Nebula for your one sentence answer about spoiler[it actually being Lucy beyond the gate with the Nyu gone.]

Thank you too hentai4anime for your summary, but I didn't read it because I really liked this anime and would rather see it for myself, hopefully sooner than later.

freshkazuki spoiler[I think the reasons for Kohta forgiving Lucy were that of course he didn't like to see people alone, even though Lucy caused that. A huge reason might be because he still doesn't fully rememeber what Lucy did. A lot of people do stupid things when it comes to their first love and this was no exception.]

Hopefully one day the manga will come this way and i will finally know why that a-hole spoiler[had horns on his head at the end of the anime.] I wouldn't mind if anyone here told me either. Everytime I think of Elfen Lied I wonder why he does.

The ending felt spoiler[really abrupt. One second he's going to the gate, the clock works, and the show ends. They ended all the other episodes so well, bastards made me want more after I watched each volume, but I felt they could've ended it better but a good ending none the less. I thought Lucy died when her other horn was removed so that is why I was confused with the ending. And for some reason i thought that with the horns gone, she wouldn't be able to use the Vectors and she was killed and accepted her death as atonement for what she did Kohta. but i was wrong.]

as far as I can tell the horns dont actually do anything, as even after Mariko(the wheelchaired one) tears off one of Lucy's horns she still(after recovering from the shock) uses all her vectors without difficulty or apparent loss of effect.

neither of the 2 men with horns could use vectors.

Kurama explains to Bandoh that the vectors are controlled by a part of the diclonius' brain

Lucy still manages to survive the attack by the soldiers despite losing her second horn, no way she could do that without the vectors.

while I would definately(and I mean I would line up and stage a sinlge man rally if need be) love to see a continuation of this anime you begrudge them for the ending as it is truly a good one and it ends on a cliffhanger just like every other episode of the series.

I also want them to translate the manga and release it here in the UK. I'd buy half a dozen copies of it just to improve sales if need be!

Elfen Lied was the first actual anime I saw everything else before ti was hentai so its special to me.

thanks hentai4anime I read your summary because I looked up the OVA episode on the ANN encyclopedia and found out it was just an "extra" episode and it doesn't feel like I missed much. now I doubt that episode will be released by itself considering it's only one episode so I doubt I'll see it on DVD anytime soon. I would read the manga just to find out why the guy had horns.

I thought it was a horrible eps, and that they shoudln't have made it. It sorta put abad impression on EL... Does anyone know why it was made? Comic relief... or just a commercial tactic to make people buy it?

There's a big clue it is Lucy at the gate at the end of the anime. spoiler[It's the clock. She was always facinated with it and even took it apart earlier. I don't think it's coincidence it started working just then, it's a bit of creative symbolism.]

yeah your right but I dunno I was set on the fact that spoiler[she had to die at the end so I figured it was a figment of his imagination, you know they were thinking of her because they even set a plate for her so they thought they saw her. Before I could start thinking of what this meant the episode ended. I wish they had atleast shown him open the gate or something.] But now that I think about it, not a bad ending in fact not bad at all considering the ending of most anime.

spoiler[If I remember right, the horns were explained as an extention of sorts of the pitheal (?) gland. Lucy also loses two of her four vectors with the loss of her one horn, if you watch closely.]

I also thought the ending to the series was perfect in terms of disciplined closure.

The heck you talkin about? The episode had a very real purpose to which you seem to have missed. spoiler[One, it showed how Lucy finally got caught. Two, why she wouldn't kill Kurama. Three, that even after the fact that she went to the "dark" side, she still had a "human" side. She wanted to protect the girl that was her friend, and she basically sacrificed herself to try and save her.] How you missed this, and thought it was made for comic relief or a commercial tactic, I have no idea.
