I recently saw some topic dealing with the ending to Gungrave, and I have been curious to watch it (or I could say continue), and saw a little bit of it back when it was on G4 or techtv, but never held my interest. In all fairness I really didn't give it a lot time (In part because of late showing and I work in the early morning) to grow on me. Furthermore it could be that I was starting from some where in the middle of series, so in short Gungrave worth your time or not??? Recomendation as to what other anime you would relate it to would be nice, thanks.
Till next time,

You will find Gungrave discussed on this board because it is one of those series which people tend to both love and hate. Some people expect to see another Trigun-ish series which in my opinion it is not. Other people really hate the second half, but I'm not one of them. The ending (last episode) of the series bothered many fans. To me Gungrave is the story of a friendship between two childhood friends who (as is revealed in the very first episode) become enemies. This might be the reason it reminds me of Berserk (another series whose first episode takes place in the future). We know the rotten future in store for our hero from the first episode, we just need to see how it all went wrong. I enjoy it when a story teller can keep you engrossed in a story (Lawrence of Arabia, Titanic, Citizen Cane to name a few) even though you know how it will end. Gungrave, like Berserk, is really about the relationship of the two guys and leaves little room for romance or comedy. The mobster/syndicate setting also reminds me of Spike and Vicious' backstory. The best way to know if you will like it is to watch it yourself, but make sure you watch the second episode, since the first is a special flashforward episode which (like Berserk) is hard to follow and doesn't establish the main characters.

I would recommend it. Like Randall Miyashiro said, the whole presentation is a lot like Berserk's with the first episode being a present time event and the rest of the series being a flashback, only this series actually goes back to the present around episode 15 or 16.

The flashback stuff is super excellent material. There was a great amount of drama, character development, and a buildup of tension that would eventually erupt into what the series becomes.

The music is wonderfully orchestrated and the art/animation fits the series very well. The only thing that really gets to me is some of the present day material, one particular character in that timeline, and the ending itself.

That thread I made about the ending explains it all, but of course you'll have to see the entire thing to understand what I was getting at. It's a great series in either language (though I've only heard bits and pieces in English, but they have some good voices casted).

And seeing as how you're such a big fan of Monster, the overall mood and presentation will be dark and good enough to get your attetion, in my opinion.

Good luck Wink.

Would it actually be good to watch the first episode last? I heard that makes it more enjoyable.

... no, they actually bring it back to the FIRST EPISODE in the middle of the series... *Unlike Berserk*

You could skip over the first episode and move onto the second... I guess... but don't watch the last episode first

Gungrave was a great series in my opinion. It has good action as well as a thouroughly entertaining storyline with some interesting characters. The dub is also very good as it's done by Bang Zoom. The only things that buged me is that spoiler[the main character, Brandon, hardly ever says anything and the ending is one of those "Choose your own ending" conclusions.] All in all I wasn't ever disapointed with my decision to start aquireing the series on DVD.

How dare you, you have taken a shot at my well being......I am not a huge fan of monster I worship it like one would a religion (if your an anime fan that would be EVA). Just kidding, I guess I will get the first volume then since it is getting very good reviews thus far. I would like to buy this complete possible in thin pack form, but I don't know if that is a risk I am willing to take. Berserk yes I could buy that blind, Gungrave seems a little tough for me, but I will give it a chance. Thanks!

Hm.. OK. Then I'll say it's nowhere near as convoluted or well written as Monster, but the flashbacks are dang good. I guess a better way to put it is somewhat like a "modern day Berserk," but minus the Behelit and with an actual ending.

Two volumes might be enough to get you hooked. I would say episodes 2-4 on Vol.1 were on the verge, but Vol.2 definitley did it for me. Try renting them if you're that unsure, though. I don't want you to feel like you wasted your hard-earned money Smile.

Not to mention Geneon DVDs cost an average of $25 per volume at Best Buy. You'd be looking at $50 for the first two volumes. Try to find someone who will let you borrow atleast the first volume because it is much better on DVD than on G4. Surround Sound and actual Widescreen, "It's better than sex". I really liked the whole series but I seriously enjoyed the flashback more than the present story but that doesn't mean I hated it. I liked it because most of the time it felt like "yeah this could definetly happen in real life" and I don't feel anime gives us this feeling most of the time.

If you like it I suggest you wait for the thinpack because if you do the math, 25 X 7 = $175 (+ Tax depending on where you live) and the thinpack shouldn't be more than $100. Well I hope not considering the Last Exile thinpack from Geneon was only $99.99 at Suncoast so maybe Best Buy or Deep Discount DVD has it for cheaper.

I suggest you watch it first as well because well maybe it's not your cup of tea so you I don't think you wanna make a $100+ investment on an anime you won't like.

My friend wants me to burn all 7 DVDs, I have the originals, for Christmas and I don't know if I should do it. He said he was going to get me a Peyton Manning Jersey, He better not backout, for Christmas and he said that all he would want from me is if I burned those DVDs for him. What would you do in my position? By the way he works at a sports shop so it is an official jersey, equipment nfl, not one of those cheap ones.

Well your in quite a pickle there, first off your first problem is this you need to switch out the Peyton Manning jersey and replace it with a Tom Brady one, then everything would be good.
Thanks for the advice on the thinpack, I might check ebay and see what I can find, then I will probably try to rent volume 1,2 (That is if I can find them) from somewhere, and then get the thinpack.
