I just watched Neon Genesis Evangelion ep 5 "Rei I" tonight on [AS] and they did indeed have an edit. spoiler[Shinji's hand on Rei's breast was edited out.] This is a very surprising since nothing else was edited out of the episode, and that includes spoiler[the camera view behind a naked Rei where the back of her breast is seen.] Is this the first edit done by [AS] on Eva?

That scene wasn´t even that bad either, Its starting in a bit so I´ll see for myself, but that scene didn´t show any nipple but he was grabbing her boob though. Sorry but I havn´t been watching it so I don´t know if that was the only edit.

Main reason for the edit, she is 14 and naked.
And no that was the second edit, earler in the episode Shinji's saying, "Bull shit," was cut. |

That particular "bullshit" line wasn't dubbed into the show until the Platinum Edition. This is apparently the same edit made in the international (I think English, but it could be German) broadcast. Nothing plot-effecting will be editted. |

This is a funny edit sense AS can go TV-MA with its anime now, and a couple of shows before R. Kelly was peeing on a 14 year old girl on the Boondocks!

The episode is rated PG with no extra warnings for adult themes so I guess they couldn't show it.
When Rei tells Shinji to get off of her, [AS] also "pauses" the screen so Shinji does not look to his left to see that his hand is on her breast. However, moments later he is still seen rubbing his left hand together. Plus, when they show Shinji on top of Rei his right hand is present, but his left hand can't be seen. I suppose they couldn't cut such a huge part like that out, but isn't Shinji being on top of Rei suggestive enough? I wonder how [AS] will handle episodes 8 and 9 when Asuka arrives on the scene. |

I don't quite get it. How could [as] show Boondocks as it is and have to edit this? I don't find it funny like RezSav did, I just find it odd. Sigh... I didn't think they'd have to edit this episode based on the frequency of TV-MA shows now, and I *know* Family Guy has gotten away with similar things before ON FCC-REGULATED PUBLIC TELEVISION. I know it's all been said before, standards are inconsistent and all that, I just hoped that had changed with their acceptance of things like Boondocks and GITS 2nd GIG. >.<

This edit does seem a bit odd, but it's not such a huge deal for me. I find edits annoying when they're done every few seconds. Watching the Boondocks with a beep every few seconds was distracting.

Having seen only the [adult swim] airing of NGE, I wouldn't have known about this scene being edited. On the one hand, I agree that in the United States it's problematic showing anyone naked who isn't considered a consenting adult. Although Kagome and Sango from InuYasha have appeared naked in episodes featuring hot springs, both are considered to be "of age" within the context of the series (not to mention in some states). Rei Ayanami, on the other hand, is still considered a child regardless of the standards used to determine such things. On the other hand, the girl in the video in the R. Kelly episode of The Boondocks is clothed when "that thing" happens to her. spoiler[Never mind that during the courtroom airing of the video evidence all relevant features are blocked out.] Both episodes-- which aired within the same Saturday programming bloc-- had girls who were 14 years old in suggestive situations. However, the naked girl seemed to warrant an edit while the clothed girl didn't. Then again, The Boondocks was made for airing on [adult swim] while NGE wasn't. (Was this post contradictory at any point? I thought I was making sense as I composed it.) |

I've missed one or two of the most recent fall episodes, but since when did Family Guy show a boob, albeit with its nipple covered up? I can't recall that ever. If you're referring to a naked Peter (like, every episode these days, for some odd reason), no private parts are shown at all. AS is therefore consistent with Family Guy. Also, as pointed out, the underage girl in the Boondocks had clothes on, which is very different in censors' eyes from an underage girl without clothes on. The issue isn't whether a show was specifically made for AS or not; the only thing that matters is the content, and in that regard, Eva was beyond the scope of things they could show. However, yes, still a bit irritated by the edit, but I'm not even watching it on AS, thanks to my Platinum DVDs, so I can't complain. And judging by Tetsujin's comment, most people wouldn't even know it was edited. |
