Chihiro's pervy friend has to be one of the most annoying characters in Anime, ever. I mean EVER.

On the other hand, Rea's situation is certainly tragic and touching. Easily the best part of the story, but I felt that it didn't get as much attention as it deserved.

I'm really hoping that the manga delves into it more. Thinking about it, the anime seemed more to focus on the lighter side of the story and the manga already feels darker. (Mind you, it's been a while since I saw it; I may change my tune on a re-watch.) I think there's a lot the author could do with the more tragic aspects of the story and get a really powerful piece out of it.

In the original run of the anime, I found Rea's backstory both unusual and poignant. At least, until it resorted to subjecting her to the same kind of random fanservice as Wanko, seemingly completely unaware of the irony that spoiler[the exploitative fanservice that's supposed to be titillating the audience is an extension of the very thing that drove her to want to die.]

I mean, I have no problems with fanservice in general. But for a series to make spoiler[sexual exploitation] a meaningful, tragic part of the storyline, and then go on to spoiler[use the very same things - voyeuristic pans, Rea being forced into embarrassing clothing or situations - as methods of fanservice] just feels terribly disingenuous and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. And I'm not making the claim that nudity inherently equals fanservice. It certainly can be done for drama or to evoke a sense of discomfort in the viewer - Perfect Blue comes to mind. But the situations I'm talking about in Sankarea distinctly felt like they were intended to be titillating for the viewer - "hur hur, isn't she cute and sexy?"

Anyway, I hope that, as you say, the manga takes a more dramatic route than the show did. Maybe the complaints I mentioned above were something created in the adaptation, though I have my doubts. Given my low opinion on the anime, I'm not exactly eager to pick up volume one of the manga, but I am curious to see what the verdict on future volumes will be when they come around.

I had the opposite reaction. I thought the anime treated it with a lot more seriousness than the manga. For example, the scene where Rea screams about her abuse into the well, the manga has him doing a spit-take, while the anime has him dropping his drink. Not a huge difference in plot terms, but in attitude, spit-takes are a comedy thing.

I absolutely agree with you Etrien about the way Rea was mishandled and undermined through the fanservice. I too felt it was disingenuous.

And they've also turned Chihiro into emo (Kimura's voice acting helped a lot here)/
