Best thing is to buy your own manga. But since you don't make money yet, it's better to ask for money for your bday so you can buy it?

People who don't know what manga is about will just say it's comic for kids. It's no use explain to them and try not to force them to read it, just let it be. I never had to explain to anyone, I just say I like japanese comic.

Yea. I agree with darkhunter. Just ask for money on your B-Day and buy it yourself. Even though my mom sort of knows about the stuff, she gives me money so I can buy it myself.

Just tell them that mangas are just comics. They'll probably leave it at that and let you keep/buy them.

Ask them which they prefer: You reading a manga for a half hour or watching another sitcom on television.

It's a relaxation reading book with a really good plot. Tell them to be happy that you're saying the word reading and fun in the same sentence. Smile

Besides, lots of parents ask for a list and then ignore it anyway. Money and gift cards are the best you can hope for afterall.

That's a pretty good idea actually. Tell them that reading is actually more resourceful than watching more reality tv.

It would be a problem though if you don't own a TV. Wink
And most parents wil give you a hard time because they're concern.

Reading is reading, man, plain and simple. Graphic novels in general are gaining a better reputation in North America thanks to the fact that libraries (and schools) are beginning to offer them. Any educator or librarian in the know will tell you that comics and graphic novels are fantastic for reluctant readers. (I'm not saying the poster here is a reluctant reader; I'm speaking in general terms.) If a kid is not interested in reading and has poor reading skills, and yet she sits down and devours a volume of manga that is a good thing. Reading is reading regardless of the quality.

For adults, there is a stigma attached to comics here in North America. A lot of people still think comics are for kids. That's not true. There is quality reading to be had in comics, both manga and North American books (not to mention Europeon as well). And I don't just mean entertaining stories; I mean stories that make you think as you read the story, and even long after close the cover. I'm talking about narrative that is as powerful and as beautifully crafted as any work of respected literature.

There are a lot of easy answers to this question, and they aren't bad ones either. Hell, you're a kid - it isn't like a 3x year old explaining anime to a hot date. Plus it's a good hobby - something to make you want to get a summer job and what-not. Manga isn't like doing drugs or pre-marital sex...your folks should be happy.

You can also pretend that you want manga so you can practice drawing and enhance your skills.

Tell them that at least you are not spending your money on drugs and narcotics.

It's what I tell my parents when they go off at my spending habits.
