D: oh my god...now I know why Darker Than Black second season made no sense!!! Holy crap.... I need to go watch something....
Just wanted to add that i love your shelf life reviews very much. They are very intelligent, insightful , humorous and honest. I was sad when you weren't doing it for a few years. Glad you are back

Just as a heads up--it might be my monitor (or my eyes?) but I think the color bar next to Rose of Versailles is set to "Rental Shelf" and not "Shelf Worthy"

Not sure if I count as a fan (since I only saw the show recently and I'm still not sure if I want to buy and rewatch it, I did enjoy it though) and I agree. I feel like if Oscar noticed Andre earlier and started that subplot sooner or if the show had even thrown in a few hints that Oscar does notice Andre in a romantic sort of way I would have been okay with it but otherwise it was a bit much to swallow to believe that she goes from seeing him as her closest friend to lover almost overnight, especially since while Oscar liked Fegerson IIRC it still took a little while for her to fall for him.
Now if you'll excuse me I'll be hiding in a bunker from all the fans who are sure to dislike that post....

Lol, I didn't think the second season of DTB was that bad. I kinda liked it too although it definitely lacked the enjoyment for me compared to the first season. The absence of Yin in the first half kinda turned me off though....
Anyways, great collection with the GTO sets, Anohana, and Usagi Drop stuff. I also saw a Grave of the Fireflies collection which I should probably get watching soon in the future.

Neither your monitor nor your eyes. The html says
Quote: | div id="kd" class="rental" |
so rental. (Apparently left-over from Kamisama Dolls in the previous article, since Rose is supposed to be rov, not kd.)

I believe the "payments" were supposed to be obsessions/phobias that got elevated to compulsions if they used their powers. The thing that didn't make sense was some contractors experienced physical phenomena that weren't psychological in origin, like when Amber got younger (in season 1) as she used her power, eventually becoming an infant (or possibly a zygote, since she vanished).

I was quite disappointed to discover the RoV boxset is missing the OVA that recaps the series...

I really dont see how anyone can say the second season is stronger than season 1 of Darker than Black. Season 1 was done much better, had more time to play around with things and Season 2 explained nothing that was unanswered in the first. The story of part two also pretty much negates itself with the ending a well.

Yeah I agree that season 1 was much better (c'mon funi, BD re-release) but I dont think season 2 deserves all the hate. I own both seasons, and yes, I enjoy S1 more--BUT S2 is also solid imo and should not be labelled as "the crappiest second season in anime history" :/

Was anyone disappointed when they say that this featured neither Kamen Rider OOO nor an annoying New Jersey baker?

Fersen is a terrible character. He's such a tacked on throwaway. I mean, I know why he's there it's just... ick. Andre, on the other hand, is a wonderful example of a male protagonist done correctly. He has so much loyalty and drive inside him and yet he still knows he's only human and has weaknesses, too, so he lets them escape into the open near the end. The first time I saw what happens to him in the end, I just couldn't believe it. That was so long ago but it still makes me cry a little bit when I watch those final episodes.
He and Jeanne (she's a whole other story...) are probably my favorite RoV characters. Oscar is amazing but... she gets enough love already.

Do the Contractors with those kinds of payments have to provide their own tacos, I wonder? Or can they spirit them using their powers? If it was the former, I'd make sure all my fights occurred around food establishments, because there's nothing worse than finding yourself in a grueling death match and having to pull out soggy food from your rucksack. |
LOL. I came to this show with a completely different perspective, as I didn't watch Darker than Black Season 1 or the OVAs. I only watched Darker than Black Season 2, and I loved it. However, I will say that the ending didn't really seem to make much sense (maybe it had something to do with me not watching the 1st season). I enjoyed the ride though. I actually felt like Suou's story was kind of interesting and compelling.
The whole thing where the contractors have to perform some act before using their powers was bizarre and crazy, but for me, that just makes it a whole lot of fun! It opens the narrative up to allow for all kinds of eccentric wackos. Everyone loves eccentric wackos in anime (see L from Death Note, who was so beloved that many fans simply couldn't like the show anymore once he was gone). Yea, eating a taco before using your powers is silly, but I'm OK with it. I would love to see what kind of weird conditions they might throw in there... do 10 jumping jacks? Write a poem? Win a match of jan ken pon? I think its fun to play around with the traditional "people with powers" formula like this.

I completely agree. Okay not completely as I actually like Fersen as a character but he never saw Oscar in a romantic light. He respected her and saw her as a great friend but he loved Marie Antoinette.
However like you I am a big fan of Andre and the Oscar/Andre romance. I always love romances where the male character supports the female character (whereas it is usually the other way around in fiction).
Also I completely disagree with those who say we should have seen the love Oscar had for Andre beforehand. For one thing that was the whole point. Oscar took Andre for granted all those years, and just never realized how much she loved him because he was always there by her side. Andre of course knew much sooner that he was in love with Oscar. The whole different class thing also complicated their relationship (but of course the French Revolution is a symbolism of how that class barrier could break down). Personally I think it is one of the most wonderful relationships in the show: one born of a life time friendship and mutual respect.
Also while I too enjoyed the 2nd half of the series more than the first (and I think most people would agree with this) I think the first part with the court politics is an excellent set up of the 2nd half. By showing us how the nobles behaved we have a better understanding of their disconnect with the people and why things happened the way they did.

Not sure if it is correct to compare 1st and 2nd seasons of DtB cause thay're completely different. Ryuusei no Gemini is more like linear action with one storyline while original had more calm atmosphere and slice-of-life elements showing everyday life in changed world. I think they are both great. Oh, and music from 2nd season is awesome, as it is from the same composer as Hellsing TV series' soundtrack.
And I'm not agree that OVA should be watched before S2. You see, that lack of knowledge regarding the events before the start of 2nd season is what makes it more intersting as some bits of information gradually unfold before viewer. OVA is not about what happened before but rather HOW it all happened. Viewer can easily put all the pieces of information himself, without watching the Gaiden beforehand.

Oh Rose of Versailles, how you made me cry so much in those last couple episodes.
I don't think I ever cried so much for an anime. I am such a whimp. But it was so good.
When are we getting that pretty movie from Toei? I refuse to accept that they've abandoned it. I refuse!
