Hey I was reading the recent press release by Section 23 for High School of the Dead, and noticed a link to "Maiden Japan", and its entry is in error;
"Maiden Japan" released Papillon Rose, not Brighter than the Dawning Blue, as explained in the first error report by doc-watson42. However, the error report by deathfromabove1993, claiming that the licensor is Sentai Filmworks, is incorrect: the press release clearly states that it was Maiden Japan. "Maiden Japan" is sort of the "spiritual successor" of the old ADV imprints Soft Cel Pictures and Happy Carrot: the imprint that they release hentai titles under, to keep them distinct from their mainstream releases (this is common practice for most anime distribution companies). However, news website Anime on DVD's editor Chris Beveridge contacted Section 23 not long after Maiden Japan first appeared, and they sent back this reply: "Maiden Japan is a label associated with Switchblade Pictures. Maiden Japan has nothing to do with Sentai or Happy Carrot. " citation: http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showpost.php?p=1744485&postcount=99 Happy Carrot of course shut down with ADV. When ADV was sold off into separate companies, "Section 23" took over distribution, "Sentai Filmworks" took over new licensing, and "Switchblade Pictures" took over live-action film distribution. Actually, Sentai and Switchblade were started up as separate companies in the last few months while ADV was still around. At any rate when they were selling off these departments they apparently wanted to make sure that the hentai division "Maiden Japan" was kept distinct from Sentai or Section 23, to the point that from a technical, legal standpoint its actually a subdivision of Switchblade. The entries for Papillon Rose and Brighter than the Dawning Blue need to be updated, as does the entry for Maiden Japan. While to my knowledge Papillon Rose is the only title Maiden Japan has licensed so far, Section 23 still refers to them in current (March 2011) press releases, so they apparently still exist on paper. |

That's not true. A.D. Vision shut down on 1 September 2009: "News: ADV Films Shuts Down, Parent Transfers Assets to Other Companies (Update 4)" but Happy Carrot's last release was Lyon Flare Collection 2: Into the Erogenous Zone on 29 December 2009, which was solicited in October 2009: "Section23 Films Announces December 2009 Releases: To Love Ru" |

hmmm....well that's just spillover from one month into the next.
Either way going on two years later I think its safe to assume that "Happy Carrot" isn't active anymore and they'd just use Maiden Japan for that sort of thing. |
