According to ANN:
Genres: action, adventure, comedy, romance
Themes: body switching, fanservice, gender switch, harem, love triangle, martial arts
Objectionable content: Significant (bloody violence and/or swearing and/or nudity)
As for my opinion, I think that there was some really heavy fanservice in the early seasons. Nudity, you can see breasts and such. Most of the cast are also some sort of martial artists so there is quite a bit of violence, bloodless mostly. No one dies or anything. I'd say it mostly comes down to whether you want to let a kid (ot maybe you're a kid yourself) see some cartoon boobs or not. I don't think it traumatizes anyone, but I'm no psychologist. I know that when I was ten, I wanted to watch Turtles.

Nope.
Your 10 year old is currently in a very fragile stage of growing up. Exposing him to mass amounts of stupid and fetish related idiocy would damage his mind.
Give him some Miyazaki stuff to watch instead. Anything from Rumiko Takahashi is bad for ANY age. It destroys braincells.

Meh, when I was 10 everyone was watching Dragon Ball. None of us had gone postal since then.
Ranma isn't my favourite show. If you want to find high quality series for children check World's Masterpiece Theater. Lots of their shows may seem surprisingly familiar.

Everything from Miyazaki is cool! Every single one of his films are very family friendly and fun for kids, but deep and intelligent enough for adults too.

I still laugh at the idea that people think stuff in movies or entertainment can still "traumatize" kids. More likely they'll be more traumatized by things in the local 6:00pm news or the internet than any movie or TV show you give them.
The only thing objectionable in Ranma is nudity. And even then, that's more of a judgement call on the parent's side as there isn't anything inherently "wrong" with a kid seeing a boob or two. They'll most likely just react by snickering at BOOBIES rather than be "traumatized" by it.

I still can't forget that bloody spider movie. But yeah, it does. Of course it does. Didn't you watch horror movies before you were 10?
Now nudity is really something that is not a problem for kids as long as it's not porn. But of course, our christian roots run so deep most believe otherwise.

Boobies, the word speaks for itself.

Sure I did. Some of them scared me, some of them didn't. They didn't do any everlasting damage to me, though. If I'm screwed up, it's more about my personal experiences and relationships rather than anything I watched as a kid!
The thing is, you don't know what will scare a kid or what won't. It's not necessarily clear cut as in "Ooh, blood and gore, he'll be too scared." I was able to watch Friday the 13th with no problems when I was 5 but The Grinch Who Stole Christmas scared the pants out of me at that age! Yet I watch the special now every year, so obviously I got over it.
There's actually nothing wrong with scaring kids with entertainment, and sometimes kids even like some thrills and chills that aren't watered down (kids are smart, they know when you're giving them watered down spooks).

I'd wait a little. I was about 14 when I started buying Ranma 1/2 manga. I think that's old enough, but that's just what I think

If he's okay with occasionally seeing animated nudity (particularly breasts), then Ranma 1/2 fine. I found it very entertaining - it's arguably what got me into anime.

When I was the kid one of the most popular cartoons was a story of a prince who transformed into magical boy. The whole transformation contained of getting tan and a masculine bra. Shall I remember that nobody recognised that till the very end of the series?
Forcing kids to watch what their parents see as sophisticated is a form of home violence. I'm completely serious. How person with no choice can form own taste? Isolating kid from every form of stupidity can lead to rising little snob or a rebel who will do everything to get things forbidden by parental control.
I was never forbidden to choose stupid things just for fun. Now I still I love campy cartoons, but a perfect evening for me is night in opera. The tastes of those who were forbidden to watch "violent and stupid cartoons" also shows no correlation between that fact and things picked up in future.
