Uwah, right before the anime airs...What a bad omen.
Either way, I really hope the artist will be okay! |

Japanese author's sure seem to have really crappy constitutions or generally just neglect their health. This seems to happen a lot.

more than neglecting their health they are forced to inhuman schedules that would infringe human rights in all Western countries - it is also true that the hikikomori-like lifestyle doesn't really do any good to your health, but if they had more human-like schedules they would probably relax a bit more, get a chance to go out and about and get less stressed/illness prone.

The Japanese are known to work themselves ill, even possibly to death. |

Despite the lacking plot Sekaiichi Hatsukoi has, it delves into what mangaka's go through fairly well, at least in my opinion. Most are depicted as women who look like they haven't slept in days, sick, coughing, and generally just muttering about deadlines and such. That being said, poor them. That must've been such a tough call to make, considering. |

This type of news usually means that the author/artist bit off more than they can chew, and is generally not indicative of chronic health problems or anything. Hence why you see a lot of such adaptation series being dropped due to "health". They are generally forced into such contracts to produce series rapidly or choose to do so underestimating the work, and then they do actually push themselves until their health suffers. At which point (hopefully!) the series is dropped and they recover. Because of this it is usually not a serious health issue that causes the series to be axed, it is simply a recognition between publisher and artist that they cannot continue to produce the work effectively. |

But if nothing is done about it then it might as well be. I mean that's three instances of sudden deaths we've gotten (that we know of) this week alone for goodness sake.

Working themselves to death? Why the hell do Japanese people put up with that, man?

I know it sounds cliched, but it's CULTURE!!! They don't like being seen as weak or vulnerable, they're also respectful to the point of annoyance. So a boss wants to stay in the office indefinitely, they would view it as disrespectful to leave first. If the office calls them in at any point, they go, which is the source of many a netorare story. That JapanChannel Aussie expat made a good video on it: instead of "take it easy, take a break" it's "ganbare, try harder". Bitching and complaining are viewed as crass, something that should always be beneath you. |
