Ah, lately I've been seeing a lot of news lately on the anime/manga industry, specifically in Japan, of how new censorship laws are being implimented and what not and how there seems to be a great deal of people already beginning to censor their works and the law hasn't even past yet.
Some tv stations which already haven't been censoring anime or showing late night anime, such as Tokyo MX have stated that they are going to cease broadcasts of late night anime period in order to appease the government:
“MX broadcasts a lot of late night anime containing panchira and other ecchi material.
As our station has a deep connection to the Tokyo government, we can’t ignore their wishes, so with the harsher law there is the possibility that we will have to refrain from broadcasting more extreme anime.”
What exactly extreme anime is, I'm not sure.. but I think that most people would agree that it would vary from sex, to violence, to suggestive material. I'm more concerned however that the impact of this will kill or mutate the anime industry into something more sterile that would resemble kind of what the Chinese animation industry is now in terms of overall story content. (That doesn't mean I hate Chinese animation, I'm just using it as an example as to how heavily it's regulated).
This brings us to the question of, what can we do to fix this as fans in North America? Well, a lot of people are feeling powerless I'm sure, and others are probably thinking we shouldn't try to fix it at all and let it be, I however, have another idea which some may find disturbing or deem it to be already a failure however due to previous trends I think it would be pretty successful.
The anime industry is on hard times in the west as well, especially in the US where people aren't sure exactly what's going on with some publishers. However, I think it's time for anime/manga publishers to now start dealing with the artists in Japan directly, IE: hiring them for their own original publications directly rather than going through japanese publications which may feel pressure to censor various material that would seem more than a little frivolous.
The idea of how this could be done for people in Japan is simple too, and that is to offer it online as well, or sell the manga to speciality stores. People who want to get the manga badly enough will be willing to pay for it online for sure as a download, not only that but I feel this will bring a new original and fresh kind of view to the anime industry that some stories seem to desprately need.
I also feel that some studios, like Funimation, should start to devote a bit more time to making their own original series, maybe hire people from Japan for the story as well and have it done in America.
It is indeed possible to have it done totally in North America as well, people in the US and Canada are talented, they can write scripts, and they can even do manga we've seen this. It's just that the total failure of other companies to cash in (such as Tokyopop) has blinded a lot of people into believing that most anime/manga US inspired shows are crap when that's not the case.
Any script can be turned into an anime if a studio desires to make it, I know some people might shutter to think what it'd be like to watch Two and Half Men as an anime since so many people know it as a live action but sitcoms are a great example of some good script writing that could be just made into anime as a start without the author being too obsessed over the fact that it is indeed an anime they are writing.
Another more important reason is that Japanese writers wouldn't be as bogged down with censorship as they would be in Japan. Granted there are other issues, but I believe that these can be worked out. No, actually I believe these must be worked out, because being able to express oneself as a writer is the core purpose of freedom of expression in any medium.
Anything that gets people talking is good regardless and I'm sure there are far more worse things made in the west that would make people upset besides lolicon for example, but I think that it would be healthy to look at this from a new angle of insight. Not to mention other anime genres as well and it might even bring out fresh surprises for some anime productions and thus the industry in general.
Well that's just my ideas on how I think the industry might help to move things along. Whew, that was a long post, what is your view about what should be done to help the anime industry?

Well, All I can say, when it comes to the industry in Japan. They only have them selves to blame. They have been focusing on getting easy money from otakus by fillling their shows with various niche content, and various (at time odd) sexual fetishes. Instead of trying to make a well written series or somthing thats just fun to watch. Given ecchi or lewd content is not always bad, but many times its just in poor taste.
I think the only "Crude" show I really enjoyed in a long time was Panty & Stocking. But thats because I love the Animation style (reminicant of tartstokvy' McCrakins, and Vasquez to a point.) And it was just stupid comedy fun. (can't wait for season 2.)
But most shows arnt really as creative with their low-brow content or smut as gainax I guess, lol.
But yea, I think if the Industry In Japan wants to improve we need more shows like the Noitamina series (Five leaves, Tatami, Fractale, etc.) and of course for the mindless fun type shows, more stuff like P&S, at least in the fun cartoony art department, maybe not the crude joke depot. lol.
As for the industry in the states. Well the fans need to stop making excuses not to buy, the companies need to get all of their bases coverd to make sure the fans don't have a legit reason or excuse not to buy. And of course the fans could support the companies more, buy the products. go to leagal stream & online manga sites. And not be jerks & steal content.
....I guess thats all I can really think of at the moment.
