I just recently finished watching High School of the Dead in 1 sitting, which i highly recommend. It exceeded my expectations even though im not very fond of Fan service and tend to stay away from it. [plus its the first time i ever watched a complete series in 1 day]
After that, i went about browsing ANN´s anime list and to my dismay i found practically no Zombie related ones. Not counting the above mentioned, and Hellsing (which has Ghouls), all that left is Zombie Loan. It´s very odd since Zombies have been gaining popularity at a steady rate for the past few years, with dozens of zombie movies, tv shows and mostly PC/console games released in a very short time span. I find it strange that Japan would skip the recent Zombie hype and not make more zombie apocalypses series. ¿Do you want/demand/need more Zombie related animes? |

The very fact that there are so few zombie anime is part of the reason that Highschool of the Dead was so anticipated, and though I can not speak for the Japanese audience, it got high praise and following on this site. Not really much out there for the genre, I know that Samurai Champloo has one episode, but probably closer to the old legend of animating bodies for slavery.
I might like more, but I often dislike story that people could get eaten and I am a bit squimish at times with gore, but HOTD was good. |

I'm all for more zombie anime, but only if it's done right. HSOD had the right amount of gore, comedy, and character development for my taste.

I'm not one to be a downer, but when HOTD started, it was a GREAT show. Had violence, had character developments going, and a story along the way. Then what happens?
"Hey guys? We're going to trade everything that made this show great and for attack of the flying panties and Z cup boobs" "Oh, thanks sir! You're a life saver" *facepalm* |

I do agree that the first episodes where indeed the best by far and the lack of actions and increase in fanservice in the latter episodes kinda drops the series a few points for me, but it was enjoyable for the most past, and aside form the fanservice, it was a "proper" representation of a zombie apocalypse like in most western products. The feeling that some characters may die at any moment spoiler[even though they all survive at the end] kept me going. HOTD was not only my first zombie anime, but also my first fanservice anime. Now i can see why i kept away from the genre for so long and its unlikely that i will ever see another fan service anime again (well, maybe witchblade, and only if it has a good story) |

This attitude some people have has always confused and amused me, not just because I enjoy most fanservice titles but on another level. So it's okay to watch an over-saturation of violent bloody gore but yet a high concentration of sexual material is objectionable to you? I'm sorry but I just think there's something ironic about that since sexual content would actually be the lesser of the two potential evils. I love Highschool of the Dead because it has both an over-saturation of violence and sexual content which makes it pretty much the Alpha and omega in decadence. In addition to that it's got sophistication as well such as emotional depth, character development, and an interesting storyline. I enjoyed the series because i didn't take it seriously, and apparently the anime didn't take itself seriously either. I saw it as simple, pure comedy (a sexual, violent comedy but comedy nontheless). They had a lot of fanservice, but most of the time they used it for comedic purpose only. I found myself and my friend laughing our butts off at 3am at the ridiculness of some scenes. spoiler[Like the part when a bullet flies right between the katana-chick´s boobies as they bounce in what should probably be supersonic speed]. scenes that are probably made to be absurde and laughed at, and feel more like a parody of the genre itself (note that since this is the only fanservice series i ever saw, i can only speak for myself with very little understanding of the genre and its rules)

Yeah, there's that aspect to. It's enjoyable because it doesn't take itself all that seriously.

What exactly made Hotd great? Wee had bouncing big boobies and zombies from the very beginning. And wee still had them 10 episodes later. The same spoiler[protagonists] that were there in the beginning, were still there 10 episodes later. The show was great, both sexually, and action wise. It just lacks a conclusion which I'm sure will be here whenever there's enough source material. Although I watched most of it drunk so I don't remember much of its greatness! Except for Saeko. Oh, yes, I've memorized all her curves. |

What made HOTD great? It stuck to the traditional zombie movie. Good story, good animation, and little to no fanservice. Sure, you had it at the beginning, but that could be ignored. Then we find out the world is experiencing the zombie invasion, which is another "stick to tradition" move. I liked it because it was plainly action, though you knew this show was meant for guys, which gave me a clue that blood and gore wasn't the only thing you were going to get. |

hipnox, your wish has been granted. Disclaimer: The above anime may or may not be about zombies, as lazyknight has not seen any of it, and simply found it via Google. |

lazyknight, you're my current hero of this quarter-hour.
i'm really surprised to hear there aren't more zombie animes ... there sure are a lot of zombie-related manga. but then again, there aren't a whole lot of western shows that could support zombies every week, animated or otherwise. i can think of several one-shot episodes inside larger frameworks (x-files, etc), but then when you get to shows the undead tend to be vampiric. which makes me wonder why zombies weren't used more in theatrical length anime or OVAs, since that (perhaps) is a more natural length. |

well maybe if the Madhouse Anime of U.S. Properites like the marvel stuff. And Supernatural do well. We might get luckey and get a Walking Dead anime, now that would be a zombie anime worth watchig. But somthing like that may also depend on how the current live action series foe walking dead does.

I have put off watching HOTD in its entirety because the bits and pieces I have watched just made me annoyed. Rather than making use of the setting and themes that go hand in hand with zombies from what I have seen the show just recycles anime cliches for humor. From what I saw I think it would be safe to classify HOTD as a zom-comedy but it is just not nearly as clever as live action ones and as a zombie fan I have to compare this anime to other media in the zombie genre.
If i completely misread this series because I have not seen all of it let me know because I would love to be wrong With that said I would love to see some more zombie anime. Its just more post apocalyptic stuff for me to nerd gasm about |
