It's too early to call that as a mistake. Smile
The U.S. release might have lossy Japanese audio like Ponyo, or might have DNR or other video filtering applied like the U.K. version Nausicaa, so the Japanese release could turn out to be the best. We'll see.

I picked up the Japanese version a few months ago. Gotta love Ghibli and their English subs. Except for Fox's Totoro's dubtitles, lol.

Yeah I guess so. At least the Japanese case looks better. I did get Ponyo just for the lossless, oh and the sticker book Smile

Doesn't look like it'll have the commentary track that features Hideaki Anno, so I'm not terribly interested right now. Does the JP disc have an English subtitle track for that commentary?

Nope. None of the extras are English subtitled. A shame indeed.

This is the only Ghibli movie I own, or have seen for that matter. I really don't feel like double dipping on what will most likely be a marginal upgrade. The JP release's artwork is much nicer too imo.

I don't understand why some of you think there isn't going to be much of a difference. I've already seen screenshots from the Japanese release, and they look incredible (and screenshots never demonstrate the full difference in quality).

Just compare the detail and color saturation on these:

Disney is one of the best (probably 2nd only to Criterion) at releasing quality blu-rays. I don't know why Ponyo lacked a lossless Japanese track, but considering reverse importation, I'm certainly not ready to lay all the blame on Disney without some evidence that it was entirely their decision.

That's unfortunate as I would have totally jumped on a super-expensive Japanese release for that alone.

As far as Disney not including these extra's for the NA release it's not surprising as from their point of view it's not worth the extra effort and cost to bring over a few extra's that only a handful of hardcore anime fans really care about. Frankly I'm just happy to be getting a BD of this movie at all and just hope they bring over his other films on BD as well Smile

The real tragedy is not seeing Mononoke Hime on Blu-ray as I would kill to see that Sad
