Interview by PCworld to an executive of Sony.

"After more than a year of touting Blu-ray Disc as the best technology to replace DVD for storing high-definition video, a top executive at Sony, one of Blu-ray's major backers, has opened the door to the possibility of unifying the format with its arch rival, HD-DVD.

"Listening to the voice of the consumers, having two rival formats is disappointing and we haven't totally given up on the possibility of integration or compromise," Ryoji Chubachi, Sony's president-elect, said at a news conference Thursday in which he discussed the company's performance and future strategy."

Chubachi's comments mark the second time that a Sony executive has signaled the possibility of a compromise between the two camps.

Dec 21, 2004 - Bandai Visual Joins the Blu-ray Disc Association

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) today announced that Bandai Visual, a leading Japanese animation (Anime) content developer, has joined the consortium. In Japan, Bandai Visual is a pioneer of animation software and widely held by viewers as a high-quality content creator. Currently, the animation movie industry is working to create a new library of high-definition content, for which the Blu-ray Disc format will provide the ideal solution. "Bandai Visual strives to provide the highest quality entertainment to consumers all over the world," said Shigeru Watanabe, senior managing director of Bandai Visual. "Creating high-definition content such as animation is a very important theme for us. We expect Blu-ray Disc to strengthen our content technology and enable higher picture quality." With this announcement, consumers can expect to enjoy a rich high-definition library of Japanese animation, or Anime, and movies on Blu-ray Disc.

So wait, does this mean they'll be exclusive to them or they'll just be realeasing on that format too. Because if they abandon DVD after I've already built up my collection of anime, I'll be really mad! Evil or Very Mad

And the change over wont be instant, it'll take several years to take place. Even today you can still buy brand new VHS tapes despite DVDs being the current standard.
