hmm hmm ok:
Easy answer is look it up which I'm sure you did. 1. How good is this show? Mediocre, but better than most crap out there. When I say mediocre, that mans it's not unique or different from the other animes that fit the genre. 2. What is the best thing about this show. Story, characters, musiq, animation, etc.? Story is character driven and animation. Animation because well because the anime characters are unique. Note I did not say setting because the setting is the typical setting for this typical anime. Medieval, Edo,... yeah whatever that way back in the day. Dungeon and Dragons stuff. 3. Why do you recommmend this show? idk think other people can answer this question. Personally I'd only suggest wasting your time watching this if you have nothing else to do. I only say that because many other animes out there better than Utawarerumono. 4. Is this show better than Eden of the East? lol no. Cmon the intro is Oasis. Seriously asking that question? 5. I read a review that said this show is a lot like Berserk. Now Berserk was one of my top 5 anime shows of all time. Is this show really a lot like Berserk and why? Then that review is garbage. The only thing Berserk and this anime have in common is the setting. The plots aren't similar. Animation isn't similar. Characters aren't similar...I'd have to see that review. Furthermore this anime is so pg. If you like animes like Berserk throw is crap out. Utawarerumono is similar to an anime like Tears To Tiara. Both of those pg animes don't even come close to Berserk. |

I ranted about this one wherever I could so might as well do it again... I suppose there will be people here saying that it is a good show, so dont mind my awful comment. I thought the series was terrible. I would recommend it to someone who has got a loooot of time on their hands and has seen absolutely every other anime made on Earth. I did not like it one bit, I though the characters were dull and zero dimensional, the story predictable, and it achieved levels of ridiculousness that I have never dreamt of. I have not seen Berserk, but God help me, I do hope that Utawarerumono has got nothing to do with it, since I already purchased Berserk and am waiting for it to get delivered. I think what bugged me the most is that there was a lot of potential in the series, but it turned out to be something not much more complex that the game it was based on (and I have seen games with more character development than the Utawarerumono series). The art itself is quite good though. And the dub was well done. Dont get discouraged, there are chances you might like it, maybe I overlooked some absolutely brilliant part of this one, so dont let me ruin your opinion on it |

The freshest thread on this series is more than 3.5 years old, so I'll allow this one as a new thread.
Though this is a fantasy series, it bears very little resemblance to Berserk; whoever told you that it did was off their rocker. This one is based on a fantasy RPG ero game, so it has a harem-like feel and nowhere near as dark an overtones. Its strong points are probably its character designs and tactical battle choreography, although it does have a pretty good story which gradually improves after a mediocre start. I reviewed most of the volumes of this series for ANN back in 2007 and consistently gave it a B or B+ grade. It's good entertainment for those who like fantasy series in general and/or harem series. |

Is this series really that bad? Anime-Planet.com gave this series a great review. I bought it for only $20.46 so maybe I didn't really waste that much of money if it will suck. Did anyone like this show?

The show isn't bad; I'd say above average. But it does have its flaws.
It is based on an erogame, of the type where one male lead gets surrounded by a bevy of beautiful females who have varied looks, temperaments, ages and bust sizes, and and the player gets the chance to bed them all. While there are some Anime based on erogames which have exceeded their game origins, Utawarerumono is not one of them. Hakuoro is pleasant and has more personality that he's often given credit for, however he's still pretty bland. And of course all the females just happen to surround him and fall in love with him... Longtime fans will know exactly what I mean by that. Then there is the dramatic change of pace at the two-thirds/three-quarters mark, what with the spoiler[mecha and Sci-Fi aspects] and all. Now, there's no reason why implementing such an idea into this sort of show will automatically fail, however the creators have to be extra careful and almost seamlessly integrate it in. They, er, did not. The pacing was also uneven; nice and fast at the start, but slow in the middle/just past the middle and then a little too fast in the last few episodes. Oh, and the villain was poorly done. The writers never bothered to do anything much with him. And that's probably the biggest gripe I have with the show. It never rose to what it could do, instead wallowing in "good enough". I feel that should be held against it. The series did do a few things right. Although it didn't do much world-building, it did show us a world that seemed varied and interesting enough. The first seven episodes were quite good, and the finale was touching. If you've bought the show already, just watch the first two episodes. They are better than many which follow, but you should have at least an inkling by then if the rest is worth your time. |

It's a good show. I'm surprised at the negative responses about it honestly as I thought it was very enjoyable myself. I wouldn't say it's like Berserk though.

I saw Utawarerumono a few years back and liked it on the whole. It's based on turned-based strategy game with a fairly generic Japanese SF/Fantasy backstory. The PC version of the game did have sex scenes in it, but all the reviews I read said they were pretty badly shoehorned into a story that didn't need them (the game was later ported to the PS2 sans without the porn).
The show starts out well enough by establishing some decent characters, setting up the mystery of who the main character is and what the deal is with the world he inhabits, and giving us a number of fights that revolve around tactics rather than special movies. In the middle stretch, though, the show starts to drag. Fighting animation is reused, more and more time is spent on the various female members of the cast doing cute things, and a number of episodes are pretty blatant filler. There are hints as to the larger backstory, but they are given sparingly. Fortunately, in the final third the show comes through with a vengeance and ends on a really high note. A new antagonist is introduced that actually has understandable motives beyond "Rahr, I'm evil!", and the stakes are raised so that for the first time there is actually a sense of peril for the main characters. The ending did fail to explain a few things (I had to visit wikipedia to answer my remaining questions) but generally wrapped things up pretty well. Overall, I liked the show, even though it dragged pretty significantly in the middle. Some people didn't care for the end, but that was generally because they preferred the moe bits that took place earlier on, or they didn't like the introduction of SF elements. I was happy to see the moe take a backseat to the plot and action, though, and I like science fiction in everything, thank you very much. |

Ok thanks. I heard this is like Twelve Kingdoms. Is that true? I saw part of Twelve Kingdoms ad I was dissappointed in it. Is this anything like that?

I really enjoyed Utaware. Not sure why some people think it's generic. The characters in particular are enjoyable. I love how Hakuoro is always trying to duck from his arduous responsibility or getting someone else to fill in for him. I also love how he fights with a metal fan. You don't see that too often. Eruru is also pleastant with her own charms. The whole cast has their quirks to be honest.
Well, the OP by Suara is just gorgeous, but I'd have to say it's a tie between the characters and the story. To be honest, I didn't care much for the ending (I know of hardly anyone who did), but I enjoyed all of the build-up... except for one arc dealing with the background of particular character.
Well, it's pretty unique. I can't think of any other show that depicts the conquest of nations from a middle ages period (no guns... just swords, lances, spears, fans, and whatever Karla's weapon would be called). Also, I love the strategy used in some of the battles. Hakuoro can be quite cunning, so even if he is outnumbered, he can come up with some effective strategies to come out with a victory.
I can think in absolutely no way of how the two can be fairly compared, as they are completely different shows. Personally speaking, I gave Eden of the East a 7 whereas I gave Utawareumono a 9. Some people would give Eden of the East a 10 and Utawarerumono a 4. It all depends on your likes and dislikes. Personally, I hated how Eden of the East squandered a wonderful set-up by not truly bringing out its potential. We only see a handful of Selecao for instance, what are the others doing? Whereas I feel Utaware never really squandered any potential, other than the ending itself. Production IG did do an outstanding job with the visuals of EotE, so those blow Utaware's visuals away, particularly when they're showing the massive army movement that's done in not-very-good CG.
This show has absolutely nothing to do with Berserk. Keep in mind throughout that Utaware likes to break up the action by having one comedy/slice-of-life episode inbetween the arcs, so that's why most people are saying that the pacing is poor. Personally, I liked those episodes cause it allowed me to see what some of the soldiers are like when they're not holding a sword. Also keep in mind that Utaware was originally a tactics-RPG/eroge, so there are plenty of female characters who will eventually swear allegiance to the main character. |

I rated it an Excellent personally. spoiler[Would have been higher if the ending wasn't so strange and confusing]
I think the show was good in several areas such as story, characters, action and music. I especially liked the large scale battles in this series because they actually employed military tactics.
I would primarily recommend it to fans of action/fantasy series. I like the ever escalating story and how spoiler[former antagonists in the show end up joining the cast as protagonists.]
There's really no basis for comparing the two shows since they're drastically different.
I wouldn't know about that since I haven't seen Berserk and don't really want to. I try to avoid unfinished works to avoid inevitable disappointment. |

Ok I started wating the series and I love it! I think it's great! I'm at episode 12 and the show is just great. My favorite character is the younger sister of the two sisters. I love her voice actress. She sounds so cute when she talks. This show sorta does remind me of Berserk in how the battles are and it takes place in like medieval times. Berserk is much more depressing though. At least so far. I would give this show so far a 8 or 9 out of ten. It's great i'm happy i bought it. I hope Eden of the East is much better than this though because I was really looking foward to that show. I Also bought that show too.

EOE is better You decided for yourself that's good. Berserk is meant to be depressing. Macbeth, Shakespeare watev.....anyway ditch it because it sounds like you don't like Dark Fantasy. Berserk is not trying to appeal happy people. You'd have a clearer understanding of what Berserk is if you read the book (which is superior). Berserk is for twisted messed up people who have sick thoughts in their heads. Basically, Berserk brings out a person's depraved thoughts and makes them visible/somewhat tangible. No and if or buts. "Fucked up" are literally the only two words the perfectly describes Berserk. Do people like inhumane, demoralizing, misogynistic, demonic, apocalyptic, some really messed up crap? Apparently yes. I'm one of them. Anyway yeah as some1 said, Utawarerumono is not bad, just that better stuff exists. If you liked war tactics go watch Code Geas(tactics), Death Note(well sort of tactics but good enough), Tytania(so-so).... And no, the above mentioned anime are not similar to Berserk. I would say Code Geas and Death Note are better than Utawatever Tytania idk. I think its on par with Utawa Anyway have fun watching. |
