In volume 12 (i think) of the manga there is a little story devoted to Seta and Haruka. I understand there was something like a love triangle consisting of Seta, Haruka and Sarah's mother. There was also the promise that Seta made with them.
When Seta is talking to Haruka about it she says she knows that his heart still belongs to 'her' but he gives her the ring and explains that he might still love Sarah's mother but that it was her last wish for the ring to be given to Haruka. She also mentions that a man who doesn't really love her being so gentle with her would only cause trouble.
So does that mean that Seta was only proposing to Haruka because their former partner had passed away? (sort of like default you could say) or was it that he would have genuinely chosen her in the end?
One last thing when grandma Hina returns and she and Kanako are about to leave Kanako mentions that "their work here is done" exactly what does that mean? Was she really in love with Keitaro or was she there for ulterior motives?
Help with this would be greatly appreciated.

IIRC he was trying to hide his nervousness but naturally goes and says the wrong things. I think it's the last or next to last volume (in a very silly story arc) that ties up that particular subplot.

Ok, Love Hina has a penchant for recycling the "likes me, likes me not?" story element to the breaking point. My take is that Kanako did feel strongly for Keitaro (icky!). In fact, it turns out almost everybody is attracted towards Keitaro as the end approaches (you can only guess what mayhem that causes).

the whole reason she said that is because she was sent there to bring them together

It was my understanding that Seta had not chosen between them when Sarah's mom had died. Since she died, he no longer had to choose, as there was only one option left. Haruka didn't want him to just pick her, since she was left, and there wasn't really anything he could say to make her believe that he wasn't going with her because she was left, since he couldn't choose while they were both alive.

I was just mentioning that the manga forum probably doesnt get many posts if this thread is still all the way up here its over about 2 months old. Or did somebody just "bump" it back up. doesnt matter really. I think love hina, the manga, is pretty good. In terms of storyline I have to say it is really sub-par but for some reason I think the drawings are great and it is overall enjoyable. I really would recommend the newer series by Ken Akamatsu Negima Magister Magi since you dont have to deal with a "keitaro" style character. It is actually a ten year old wizard boy instead. It has a lot more story than love hina just in the first 3 volumes

Kanako was adopted into the Urashima family, mind... So it's NOT like that...
