I was wondering about any Canadian users who use rightstuf. I recieved my order today, but I had to pay a 28 dollar COD charge. I thought I was getting a good deal (free shipping and everything) . I know this has nothing to do with rightstuf, but I'm wondering if other Canadian users have had to pay hefty COD charges. I buy stuff from ebay all the time, including even larger packages than what I got today (it had all the heat guy singles and artboxes, both school rumble seasons, Moon phase chipboard boxset, The Third complete, Withblade blu ray, so you can image the box is moderately large), and I've never paid a COD charge. Can anyone shed some light on this for me? With the COD charge I'm better off sticking with ebay sellers. I'm in Newfoundland if that makes a difference (?).
Thanks ! |

Is that COD a customs fee? Because I know Blood- orders from TRSI all the time... and there has been once in a while he's been slapped with an additional fee. If that's the case you probably just got unlucky with your first order.
Hopefully Blood'll see this and perhaps shed more light on it... |

*appears in a puff of smoke*
Did someone call? jmfsilenthill, I think you'll find that $28 fee was a combination of Canadian sales taxes plus a $7 C.O.D charge. TRSI does not charge Canadian customers either GST or PST, so that's collected when your delivery arrives. I live in Ontario, so I pay 5% GST plus 8% PST and then the $7 C.O.D charge. I'm not sure where in Canada you live, so it's possible you may get dinged for more than $7 C.O.D. I always order a minimum of $150 US worth of stuff to get the free delivery, which means I'm usually paying $28 or higher all in when the package arrives. Hope this helps. eta: that $7 C.O.D. is not a customs charge. TRSI uses a private shipper to get the package to Canada and then Canada Post takes over the actual delivery and collection of the sales taxes. The $7 is what they charge for that service. |

Thanks alot Blood-. I live in Newfoundland and I think our tax rate is the same as yours, but It's kind of a bummer...but oh well. Thanks again. Edit: Yeah I just looked at the box and it has a charge of 21.36 for tax, and then the 7 dollar cod charge. Guess we pay the same thing . |

I also realized why my ebay orders aren't COD'd....most Ebayers mark merchandise as "gift," but Rightstuf doesn't. Haha.....dammit .[/list]

Actually, I think the deal there is you can import stuff into Canada and not got dinged paying sales tax IF the total value of the item(s) is $50 or less. Anything over that and you have to pay. It's still cheaper to order $150 of stuff from TRSI to get the free shipping than it is to keep your orders $50 or less and escape the sales taxes. |

You could be right, but I recently bought Noir Vol1-7 and artbox (sealed) from a US seller. I think I paid like 70-75 bucks for it and I didn't pay any tax or anything on it. It's a seller I buy from fairly frequently, and he marks his purchases as 'gift.' But you are right, it's still cheaper to buy from Rightstuf in the long run, especially with their sales and bargain bin stuff. |

Ah, I see. It's probably easier for an independent seller on eBay or Amazon to claim a shipment is a "gift" as opposed to a larg-ish online seller like TRSI.

Yeah they can get away with, but I believe any business (or I think anything sold for profit) is required to be categorized as merchandise. I'm glad quite a few don't do it though .

Hm yeah I know what you mean sometimes I feel like I've saved a bundle after blowing a bunch of money but then have to pay 30 bucks in shipping and taxes, feels like a kick in the pants. But I haven't given up on Rightstuf, just wait and save up till i have enough to buy an order over $150 and get free shipping. Their deals and the bargain bin is too much to say no to lol.
Also, if one of your packages is covered in yellow Canadian Border Services tape, that means that the CBS people have randomly searched your order. Make sure you have everything, my orders have been searched a few times thankfully nothing's been taken, (I think the worst thing I've ordered from them is Puni Puni Poemy and that is only banned in New Zealand). If they take stuff from you, good luck getting it back, you'll need it, I've heard plenty of horror stories about it. But showing the tape off to my friends is always fun. |

So I guess ordering something likeAqua Bless might be a little sketchy? |

I think out of roughly 15 or so TRSI packages, only one was opened up by our Customs buddies. If memory serves (and it may not), I think it was my Moonphase wallscroll. They obviously didn't want it, because it eventually made it to me.

Since Rightstuf declares the full amount on the form you will get hit up every time. Typically customs will not hit up packages over and around $50 but anything over $100 they will hit you up for sure so if your ordering $150+ worth of stuff every time for the free shipping your going to have to work in paying for customs COD charges as well. Rightstuf is still pretty good as despite the COD charges and depending on what your ordering it's almost always still better what your paying at retail (by a large margin). My problem with Rightstuf is more the shipping times as packages from them take FOREVER which is why I hardly use them (last package took 5-6 weeks uggg).
I would recommend checking out Amazon.ca as their anime prices are mostly reasonable and they ship out of Toronto (and free shipping). |

Ahaha to think I almost clicked on that link while at work. It depends, I heard a year or two ago that Canada banned some rape hentai stuff. About the importing based on content thing, I read this court decision a while back http://csc.lexum.umontreal.ca/en/2000/2000scc69/2000scc69.html , its pretty long (it's a supreme court ruling lol) but gives insight into the problems that some importers face when dealing with Customs people.
If only Amazon had a bargain bin lol... though I could've sworn I've been hit up on orders less then 50 dollars, I only started my 150+ rule recently (150+ is a lot of money lol). |
