What I mean by this is a recommendation that you would make concerning two -- or more! -- series that examine a topic/genre from decidedly different perspectives.
For example, one pair of bookends that I would recommend are Haibane Renmei and Hell Girl. While it is true that there are hardly ANY similarities between the two, one thing that they do share together is the unknown facing those who "pass on" a one-way journey, as it were. Perhaps Requiem From the Darkness would also be appropriate to include with the above two? It, too, also includes people being compelled to "pass on" a one-way journey, after all (although it seems to me that it's more an extreme version of Hell Girl and doesn't look at quite the same issues that Haibane Renmei does). |

Um, is this asking for recomandations? Cause that is not allowed...
Or did you just want to "compare" two shows that tell a similar story (but at a different perspective)? |

I would bookend Strawberry Marshmallow with...
...Elfen Lied. Why? Because one is about cute girls doing cute things and the other is about cute girls doing uncute things. But seriously, watching the two together would be pretty damn trippy. |

I'd bookend Strawberry Panic with Maria-sama ga Miteru: schoolgirl crushes both, but one over the top melodrama with lots of explicit pairings and one of the most over the top evil psycho lesbians (TM) to feature in a schoolgirl crush drama ... and the other deliberately understated, almost entirely platonic, where the exciting date is not waking up the next morning in the horse's barn with no clothes on, but teaching big sister how to order food at a fast food restaurant.
In an entirely different genre, I'm curious what one would bookend with Cowboy Bebop. |

I tend to watch series two at a time, and, inevitably, I end up comparing and contrasting them.
I recently finished watching Occult Academy and Highschool of the Dead. To be simplistic, both involve a doomsday scenario and how the characters deal with it. The big difference, to me, was OA was always hopeful, while HOTD was fatalistic. It didn't make one more enjoyable than the other -- in fact, it was the differing views of the end of life as we know it that made each interesting in its own way. |

EDIT: How could I forget Dead Leaves -- An OAV whose illustrators were clearly dropping acid during the whole production. What happens when the bounty hunters turn in the wanted criminal? Why, said criminal stages a break out, of course!! I would absolutely pair this up with Cowboy Bebop! Last edited by nobahn on Wed Sep 29, 2010 11:27 pm; edited 1 time in total |

OK. I know this might sound kind of weird, but I would bookend Shigofumi and Loveless. Both series are about child abuse, contain supernatural elements, and have about the same number of episodes.
I would "bookend" Outlaw Star with that one. |

I wouldn't suggest you bookend it with anything. Whatever you use is just going to seem like a letdown by comparison. |

Starting off my bookshelf:
Strawberry Marshmallow left of "Little Women" and When They Cry. Why the pairing: One is a slice-of-life show featuring 4 girls having very unique personalities which makes us laugh and the other has 4 girls having very unique personalities which makes us cringe. Initial D left of "Indiana Driver's Manual" and You're Under Arrest. Why the pairing: I took a chance ID features some racing in it, though having never seen the series. I wanted to pair something up with a series featuring out-of-control police officers with souped-up squad cars. GhostHunt left of "Conspiracy Theories: Fact or Fiction" and Spice & Wolf. Why the pairing: The cast of GH often spends a few episodes helping clients resolve their ghost problem. Not all episodes deal with the supernatural, which is why the addition of Holo would make this an entertaining ensemble. Aria left of "Tourist Attractions Away From the Crowd" and Kodocha. Why the pairing: Aria is as slow as molasses and Kodocha is extremely fast paced. This pairing just seemed natural. Ristorante Paradiso left of "Meals in 15 Minutes" and Sgt. Frog. Why the pairing: Surely you jest. Pani Poni Dash left of "Best School Choices: 2010 Edition" and Negima. Why the pairing: Both shows feature teachers at the age of 10. While they don't have "polar opposites", the spectrum on their teaching methods makes them quite suitable for a pairing. Noein left of "Silicon: The Revolutionary Element" and Divergence Eve. Why the pairing: Because everyone loves a good breast joke involving dimensional rifts. Lucky Star left of "How To Advertise In Anime" and Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Why the pairing: LS is filled with tons of references to MoSH so one can watch the product after watching the ads. Outlaw Star left of "How to Write an Original Story" and Coyote Ragtime Show. Why the pairing: Because they're the same series with a few "reboot" changes. Rozen Maiden left of "How to Entertain with Puppets" and Saber Marionette J. Why the pairing: Both series features non-human characters having human-like qualities... sans the strings, of course. This was fun, but I think I'm done now. |

Outlaw Star and One Piece
Although the main characters are different in both personality and reasons, both tackle a journey with pirates making their way to an almost mythical treasure and making former enemies a part of the crew. The Outlaw Star = Merry Go (or Sunny Go), Grand Line = Galactic Layline and The Laylines treasure = ONE PIECE biff bam pow. |

Kino's Journey vs Golden Boy
Although both characters undertake an educational journey... well, Kintaro onbiously had a quite unique view on education Noir and Darker than Black It's not only the sex of the characters, although I suppose having a female working as a hitman certainly changes the perspective. [/b] |

Rurouni Kenshin:Tsuiokuhen and Peacemaker
Both of these went into the Ikeda-ya Incident; with the Kenshin OVA telling the view of things on the Choshu POV and Peacemaker on the Shinsengumi POV. |

Actually, I would have chosen "Gunslinger Girls" as a counterpoint to "Haibane Renmei" instead of "Hell Girl." Both casts of girls are aware that they are soon to "check out" of their existence and have no memory of their former selves while older male overseers govern their lives. Yet one is sedate and the other is so not. The haibane and gunslingers have a limited time to shine but for entirely different reasons and for decidedly different ends. "Hell Girl" felt so much like a retread of "Vampire Princess Miyu" the series that I started adding "into the darkness, ShinMA!" whenever Ai used her set-piece speech to deliver vengeance. I think these two shows are counterpoints because one does her thing to save humans and the other does her thing to damn humans. For those of you saying, "yeah, but what about the reporter and his daughter in Hell Girl?" then I direct you to "Vampire Princess Miyu" the OVA. "Welcome to the N.H.K." and "Genshiken" are... wait, I think a reviewer on ANN mentioned these two as polar opposites on much the same subject. Yada, yada, one's a sympathetic look at otaku while the other is rather harsh to the point of being mean-spirited. I have not finished "When They Cry" yet but just looking at that title made "Shuffle!" pop to mind. 5 girls, 1 boy and hilarity (S!)/horror (WTC) ensues. Yeah, the reasoning is rather weak but I thought it funny. "Ninja Nonsens" and "Jubei-Chan" are both modern day ninja stories with girl protagonists but NN's main girl is a sexually harrassed airhead who truly wants to be a great ninja while JC's central femme is a sexually pursued airhead who truly wants to not be a reincarnated samurai. |
