I've heard great things about this series so I've always wanted to watch it. However all the complete collections I can find that include the directors cut episodes are insanely expensive compared to the prices of other complete collections.

i dont think that 39.99 + tax/shipping isnt a bad idea after all if you buy the Holiday Edition on TRSI. Plus amazon is more pricey if you look at it now. i bought my holiday edition for about $50 - $$60 if i remember right. But i dont care. i like the series even though Shinji always gets on my nerves(gaah!! i wanna punch his face). Well anyways, why not show some gratitude for the series and buy whatever feels best for you. Perfect Collection, Platinum Perfect Collection, Thinpak, Holiday Edition, it depends on you. For me, it wasn't about how cheap it could get, its formally all about what's gonna look best for my dvd shelf. GL =)

$40 is not expensive for a 26 episode series (plus the Director Cut episodes)

$40 is considered expensive now? That's lower than the average price of half-season sets that are coming out now and days. -sigh-
Anyway, never seen the show, and never plan on doing so. However, if you like the show that much and really want to get it, go for the collection that pleases your wallet better or pleases your eyes better (personally, I tend to go for what pleases my eyes). |

I just picked the black box Perfect Collection a month ago at my local used shop for $35. That's pretty much the cheapest I've ever seen it.

I bought the black box EVA set way back when before the directors cut came out.
The price? Two hundred and fifty bucks at FYE. So 40 bucks is a drop in the bucket. |

I found the black DVD box at Best Buy for $120 in 2003. That was a f*cking steal back then. If $40 is expensive now then wtf... remember $30 VHS tapes?? Bought all of those with the exception of a few as presents for Christmas and birthday. Thanks mom ahaha.

I don't think using the prices of yesteryear is a good argument since then and now are two totally different worlds. However, even by today's cheap standards, $40 isn't all that much. So uh...

It's a 26 episode series. It is a proven seller. A premium title. And if you compare it to purchasing two 12/13 episode seres (or even the first two seasons of a show like Hidamari Sketch), you're still paying less for Evangelion per episode.
It is your choice on whether to pull the trigger on purchasing... but to use "expensive" as your reason not to is misinformed at best... |

$40 for 30 episodes (26 Original + 4 Director's Cut) and a dub is from a bad deal. That's a better deal than a 13 episode show for $20, which is cheaper than most S.A.V.E. editions.
I got the Plat Collection brand new on Amazon for that same price. It was about 4 or 5 years ago and I haven't seen them ever do a price like that since. |

What's the deal with the "holiday edition" anyways? What set it apart from the rest of the Platinum releases?

$40 is a great deal given you enjoy the series.
Then again, I buy Japanese BD sometimes. Perhaps I am just crazy. |

The reason NGE is expensive because it's a classic that's still moderately in demand and it was released by ADV who doesn't have a discount re-release line like Bandai's Anime Legends or Funimation's Viridian/SAVE line.
So where as you can pick up most older series for super cheap, discount prices, NGE will still cost you a bit. Mind you, the 'Holiday Special' version is often heavily discounted since a ton of places have excess stock of them that nobody wants*. As you pointed out, Rightstuf has it for just $40 which is really not too bad. *The Holiday Special was a so called 'limited edition' re-release of the platinum version that cost significantly more than the earlier platinum boxed set. In reality though it's basically a cheaper looking re-release that's not nearly as nice as the platinum boxed set which is still pretty commonly available. They just called it 'limited edition' to try and justify a price increase. Not surprisingly, very few people fell for this and now there's a ton of them out there unsold. There's nothing strictly wrong with it though. It's a perfectly functional, cheaper re-release now that the price has dropped to reflect that so it's probably your best bet to buy. |

That makes sense. In that case, go for it TC. |

I paid $100 for the tin boxset that came with the director's cut and the original cut episodes, but it was preordered. I think it was actually a bit more then that.
But yeah $40 is a pretty good price for a 26 episode series. |
